Buproprion, Dextromethorphan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Auvelity combines dextromethorphan and bupropion. The bupropion part isn't just along for the ride here, it's there to block an enzyme so the dextromethorphan sticks around longer and works in the brain. The dextromethorphan side does pass through CYP3A4, which is the enzyme Sweet Annie may affect.

Honestly, the data here is messy. In lab dishes, one part of Sweet Annie (artemisinin) seems to speed up CYP3A4 while the whole extract seems to slow it down, so we can't say which way it lands in a real person. If the herb sped things up, you might get a bit less benefit; if it slowed things down, you could see more dizziness, nausea, or jitteriness. This is only test-tube evidence, so don't panic, but please run it by your pharmacist before combining them.

In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP2B6, possibly increasing CYP2B6 activity by 1.6-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP2B6 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP2B6 substrates.

Auvelity combines bupropion and dextromethorphan, and the bupropion piece is handled in part by a liver enzyme called CYP2B6. Here's the catch with Sweet Annie: in lab dishes, its main compound artemisinin seems to speed that enzyme up, while the whole-plant extract seems to slow it down. So we genuinely can't say which direction it would push your bupropion levels in real life. If activity rose, your bupropion could clear faster and feel less effective; if it dropped, levels could climb and bring more dry mouth, jitteriness, trouble sleeping, or in rare cases seizures.

Keep in mind this is only test-tube evidence, not studies in people, so the real-world effect is uncertain. Still, before pairing Sweet Annie with Auvelity, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor.
