Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Here's the situation with Sweet Annie and your citalopram (Celexa). Your body partly clears citalopram using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, and Sweet Annie may tug on that enzyme. The tricky part is that the lab data points in two directions: one Sweet Annie compound (artemisinin) seemed to speed the enzyme up, while the whole-plant extract seemed to slow it down. So we honestly can't say for sure which way it would go in a real person.

Citalopram is an active drug, not a prodrug, so if its breakdown sped up you might get less benefit (low mood creeping back), and if it slowed down you could see more side effects like drowsiness, nausea, or jitteriness. This is based only on test-tube studies, so it's more of a heads-up than an alarm. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
