Why this applies to Etonogestrel

Etonogestrel falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.

Sweet Annie may alter plasma levels and clinical effects of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
In vitro research shows that the Sweet Annie constituent artemisinin induces CYP3A4, possibly increasing CYP3A4 activity by 1.9-fold. However, Sweet Annie extract seems to inhibit the activity of CYP3A4 in vitro, suggesting that other constituents of Sweet Annie play a role in its effects on the overall activity of this enzyme. More information is needed to determine whether taking Sweet Annie extract affects the metabolism of CYP3A4 substrates.

Etonogestrel, the hormone in the Implanon (and Nexplanon) implant, is a birth control method that your body clears using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Sweet Annie may nudge that enzyme. The tricky part is the science points in two directions. Lab studies suggest its main compound, artemisinin, can speed CYP3A4 up, which could lower your hormone levels and make the implant less reliable. But whole Sweet Annie extract seemed to slow the same enzyme, so the real net effect in people just isn't clear.

Because an unplanned pregnancy is a big deal, I'd treat this cautiously even though the evidence is only test-tube level. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist before pairing them, and ask whether a backup method makes sense.
