HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Fluconazole
Fluconazole falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Sweet Annie interacts with.
There is some concern that Sweet Annie can adversely affect the liver.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: both Sweet Annie and fluconazole can be tough on your liver. Fluconazole, the antifungal in Diflucan, occasionally raises liver enzymes or, rarely, causes more serious liver irritation. Sweet Annie (the artemisinin herb) has also been linked to possible liver stress in a few reports. The worry is that taking them together could add up and put extra strain on your liver.
I'll be honest with you, this is a theoretical, anecdotal concern, not something proven in solid studies, so I don't want you to panic. Still, watch for warning signs like yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, nausea, or unusual tiredness. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these two, especially if your fluconazole course is a long one.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Fluconazole page
“Fluconazole (Diflucan) treats fungal infections, and I would pair it with supplements carefully. Nearly half of the 81 ingredients with an interaction on file, 38 of them, put extra strain on the liver, which is already busy processing the antifungal.”

About Sweet Annie
What is Sweet Annie?
- Malaria (traditional)
- Fever
- Inflammation
- Digestive complaints
- Antimicrobial support
- Insect repellent
Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) is the source of artemisinin, a compound used in prescription antimalarial drugs. While the purified drug is well studied for malaria, the herb itself as a supplement is not proven for the wide range of conditions people use it for, and self-treating malaria with the raw herb is dangerous. Talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
About Fluconazole
What Is Fluconazole Used For?
Brand names: Diflucan, Diflucan Injection
Fluconazole treats several fungal infections. These include Candida infections of the mouth, throat and esophagus (the tube from the throat to the stomach), and cryptococcal meningitis (a fungal infection of the lining around the brain).
Vaginal yeast infections are a labeled use of the tablets (Diflucan and fluconazole tablets) and of products labeled for both tablets and suspension. They are not listed for fluconazole oral suspension on its own or for the intravenous (IV) products. All products are also used to lower the chance of candidiasis in people having chemotherapy and/or radiation before a bone marrow transplant.
