Here's the simple version: Interferon Beta-1b can be tough on your liver. It's a known side effect that this MS medication can bump up your liver enzymes, and your doctor likely checks bloodwork because of it. Sweet Annie (Artemisia annua) has also been linked to occasional liver irritation in some reports.

So the worry is that taking them together could add stress to your liver, with possible signs like fatigue, nausea, belly pain on the right side, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. To be honest, this is theoretical and based only on scattered anecdotal reports, not strong studies, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, since your liver is already being watched, please run Sweet Annie by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Interferon Beta-1b Injection Used For?

Brand names: Betaseron, Betaferon, Extavia

  • Interferon beta-1b injection is used to reduce episodes of symptoms in patients with relapsing-remitting (course of disease where symptoms flare up from time to time) of multiple sclerosis (MS, a disease in which the nerves do not function properly and patients may experience weakness, numbness, loss of muscle coordination and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control). Interferon beta-1b is in a class of medications called immunomodulators. It is not known exactly how interferon beta-1b works to treat MS.
