Adalimumab falls under IMMUNOSUPPRESSANTS — the group Thuja interacts with.

Thuja might stimulate immune function. Theoretically, taking thuja might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy. Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Humira (adalimumab) works by quieting down an overactive immune system, which is how it calms conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, and psoriasis. Thuja, on the other hand, is thought to stimulate the immune system. So in theory, taking thuja could push against what Humira is trying to do and make your treatment less effective. That might show up as a return of joint pain and swelling, gut flare-ups, or skin symptoms that had been under control.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern, based on how each one is thought to act rather than solid studies in people. Adalimumab isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about liver enzymes. Still, since thuja can also be toxic on its own, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

Thuja, also called northern white cedar or arborvitae, is a tree whose leaf and oil have a long history in folk and homeopathic medicine, especially for warts and immune support. Solid human evidence for these uses is very limited, and the undiluted oil contains thujone, which can be toxic. Talk with a pharmacist or doctor before using it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

What Is Adalimumab Injection Used For?

Brand name: Humira

Adalimumab injection treats a range of moderate-to-severe inflammatory conditions in adults and some children. These include rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, plaque psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa (a chronic skin condition), and non-infectious uveitis (inflammation inside the eye). It is also approved to treat polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis in patients as young as 2 years old, and Crohn's disease in children 6 years and older.

Yuflyma is additionally approved for non-infectious uveitis in pediatric patients 2 years and older, and for hidradenitis suppurativa in patients 12 years and older. Not every brand or formulation is approved for every condition listed — your prescriber will match the right product to your specific diagnosis.
