Immunosuppressant drugs include azathioprine (Imuran), basiliximab (Simulect), cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune), daclizumab (Zenapax), muromonab-CD3 (OKT3, Orthoclone OKT3), mycophenolate (CellCept), tacrolimus (FK506, Prograf), sirolimus (Rapamune), prednisone (Deltasone, Orasone), and other corticosteroids (glucocorticoids).

Here's the basic idea with Thuja and omacetaxine (Synribo). Thuja is thought, mostly from lab and test-tube work, to nudge the immune system to be more active. Omacetaxine isn't a classic immunosuppressant, but it's a chemo drug for CML that lowers blood counts and dampens immune defenses as part of how it works. So in theory, an immune-stimulating herb could tug in the opposite direction of your treatment.

I want to be honest that this concern is theoretical, based on how these compounds might behave rather than real patient studies, so don't panic. Still, when you're on cancer therapy, I'd skip Thuja supplements unless your oncology team clears it. Please loop in your oncologist or pharmacist before adding it.

What Is Omacetaxine Injection Used For?

  • Omacetaxine injection is used to treat adults with chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML; a type of cancer of the white blood cells) who have already been treated with at least two other medications for CML and can no longer benefit from these medications or cannot take these medications due to side effects. Omacetaxine injection is in a class of medications called protein synthesis inhibitors. It works by slowing the growth of cancer cells.
