In vitro research shows that triptolide, a constituent of thunder god vine, inhibits CYP1A2 enzymes in human microsomes. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for combining Thunder God Vine with diazepam (Valium). This herb contains a compound called triptolide that, in lab dish studies, slowed down a liver enzyme called CYP1A2. Diazepam is partly cleared by that enzyme, so in theory the herb could let diazepam build up a bit more than usual. Since diazepam isn't a prodrug, more of it sticking around means stronger effects, think extra drowsiness, dizziness, slowed thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet.
I'd keep this in perspective, though. This is only a theoretical concern from test-tube research, and it hasn't actually been seen in people. Still, Thunder God Vine has its own real risks, so please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before pairing these two.

Here's the basic idea with Valium (diazepam) and Thunder God Vine. Your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break diazepam down and clear it out. One of the active compounds in Thunder God Vine, triptolide, has been shown in lab dish studies to slow that enzyme. In theory, that could let diazepam build up a bit more than usual.
If that happened, you might feel the typical diazepam effects more strongly, things like extra drowsiness, dizziness, fuzzy thinking, or feeling unsteady on your feet. I want to be honest, though: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube work, and it hasn't actually been reported in real people. Still, since both can be sedating and Thunder God Vine can be harsh on its own, please check with your doctor or pharmacist before combining them.

Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety and to control agitation caused by alcohol withdrawal. It is also used along with other medications to control muscle spasms and spasticity caused by certain neurological disorders such as cerebral palsy (condition that causes difficulty with movement and balance), paraplegia (inability to move parts of the body), athetosis (abnormal muscle contractions), and stiff-man syndrome (a rare disorder with muscle rigidity and stiffness). Diazepam is also used along with other medications to control seizures. Diazepam is in a class of medications called benzodiazepines. It works by calming abnormal overactivity in the brain.
