Rifampin falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Thunder God Vine interacts with.

Theoretically, thunder god vine might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that triptolide, a constituent of thunder god vine, inhibits CYP3A4 enzymes in human microsomes. This interaction has not been reported in humans.

Here's the idea behind this pairing. Lab tests suggest Thunder God Vine may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is one of the routes your body uses to clear rifampin. If that clearing slows, more rifampin could linger in your system. In theory that might nudge up rifampin-type side effects like an upset stomach, harmless orange coloring of urine and tears, or strain on the liver.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is theoretical, seen only in test-tube studies, and it has never actually been reported in real patients. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since both can stress the liver, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before combining them, and don't change your TB treatment on your own.

What Is Rifampin Used For?

Brand names: Rifadin, Rimactane, Rifadin Injection, Rofactor

Rifampin treats all forms of tuberculosis (TB). It is almost always used in combination with other antibiotics — your doctor will build a multi-drug regimen tailored to your infection. Treatment usually runs for at least 6 months total.

Rifampin is also used to clear Neisseria meningitidis bacteria from the nose and throat in people who carry the germ without being sick themselves. It is not used to treat active meningococcal disease. The intravenous (IV) forms — Rifadin IV, Rifadin IV NOVAPLUS, and the injectable form of Rifampin — are specifically indicated when a patient cannot take the drug by mouth.
