Some foods, particularly those high in fiber or containing certain minerals like calcium or iron, can bind to thyroid hormones and reduce their absorption in the digestive tract. Additionally, taking thyroid medications with certain drugs, like antacids or calcium supplements, can hinder the effectiveness of the thyroid medication, necessitating adjustments in dosage or timing. Prescription thyroid medications, such as Synthroid, are recommended to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 30 minutes before food and other medications, for optimal absorption.

Here the concern runs in one direction: your thyroid extract is the sensitive one, not the doxylamine. Thyroid hormones don't absorb well when other things are sitting in your stomach at the same time, so taking your Unisom right alongside the extract could blunt how much thyroid hormone you actually take in. The doxylamine itself works just fine either way.

The simple fix is timing. Take your thyroid product on an empty stomach, then wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before your doxylamine. Since doxylamine is usually taken at bedtime for sleep, spacing the two apart is often easy. Honestly though, a doctor-prescribed thyroid medicine is far safer than animal-gland extract, so please loop in your pharmacist before relying on it.
