ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Doxylamine Succinate
Doxylamine Succinate falls under ANTICHOLINERGIC DRUGS — the group Bacopa interacts with.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea: doxylamine (Unisom) works partly by blocking acetylcholine, a chemical messenger in the brain. Bacopa appears to do the opposite, nudging acetylcholine levels up. So in theory, the two could work against each other. Bacopa might slightly blunt doxylamine's sleep-promoting and drying effects, and doxylamine might cancel out some of the memory benefit people take bacopa for.
I want to be honest about how soft this is. This warning comes from theory and lab work, not from real-world studies in people, so it may not amount to much for you. Still, if you take doxylamine for sleep and it doesn't seem to work as well after adding bacopa, that's worth mentioning. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Doxylamine Succinate page
“Someone reaching for doxylamine succinate (Unisom) to fall asleep is often the same person browsing the supplement aisle, and that pairing deserves genuine care here. About Bacopa
What is Bacopa?
- Memory and cognitive support
- Anxiety and stress
- ADHD symptoms

Bacopa is an Ayurvedic herb most often used for memory and thinking. Some small studies suggest it may modestly help memory when taken regularly for several weeks, but the evidence is limited and quality varies. It is generally well tolerated but can cause stomach upset, and it should be avoided in pregnancy and breastfeeding due to a lack of safety data.
