Here's something to keep in mind about pairing tragacanth with colesevelam. Colesevelam itself isn't absorbed into your bloodstream. It works right inside your gut, grabbing onto bile acids so your body clears more cholesterol. Tragacanth is a gel-forming fiber that swells in fluid, and on paper it could get in the way of how things move and mix in your digestive tract.

This concern is theoretical, based on how fiber behaves rather than on real studies with this drug. Still, since both work in the gut, a thick gel could blunt how well colesevelam binds bile acids, possibly making it a bit less effective. Tragacanth can also worsen the constipation or bloating colesevelam sometimes causes. A simple fix: space them out, taking tragacanth 30 to 60 minutes after your dose. Run it by your pharmacist to be safe.

Tragacanth is a plant gum used mainly as a thickener and emulsifier in foods, cosmetics, and medicines, and traditionally to soothe the throat and gut. There is very little solid human research showing it treats any specific condition. It is generally considered safe in food amounts, but anyone with allergies or who is pregnant or breastfeeding should check with a pharmacist or doctor first.

About Colesevelam

What Is Colesevelam Used For?

Brand names: WelChol, Lodalis

Colesevelam is used alongside diet and exercise to reduce high LDL cholesterol (the "bad" cholesterol) in adults with primary hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). It is also approved to lower LDL cholesterol in boys and girls aged 10–17 who have heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH) — an inherited condition that causes very high cholesterol — when diet and lifestyle changes alone haven't worked.

Colesevelam tablets and oral suspension (Welchol and colesevelam hydrochloride products) are also used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, as an add-on to diet and exercise. Colesevelam is not for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
