Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the gist with tragacanth and your seizure medicines. Tragacanth is basically a gummy fiber, and when it hits fluid in your gut it swells into a thick gel. That gel can sometimes grab onto a pill that's dissolving nearby and change how much actually gets absorbed. With phenytoin and phenobarbital, the worry is mostly about losing a little drug, which could mean weaker seizure control. That matters because both of these are narrow-window drugs where even small swings in blood level can tip you toward breakthrough seizures or, the other way, drowsiness and unsteadiness.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on how the gum behaves, not from real patient studies. A simple fix is spacing them out: take your medicine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any tragacanth. Run it by your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.
