ORAL DRUGS
Why this applies to Phenylephrine
Phenylephrine falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Tragacanth interacts with.
Tragacanth contains hydrocolloidal fiber which can decrease, increase, or not affect oral drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take tragacanth 30-60 minutes after oral medications.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: when you take oral phenylephrine (like Sudafed PE) for stuffiness, your body has to absorb it from your gut to get any relief. Tragacanth is a gummy fiber that swells into a thick gel when it hits fluid. In theory, that gel could grab onto a pill and slow, lower, or even slightly raise how much phenylephrine you absorb. If less gets in, your congestion may not clear up as well; the worry isn't really about extra side effects here.
Keep in mind this is only a theoretical concern based on how fiber gums behave, not proven cases. An easy fix is spacing them out: take your phenylephrine first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before the tragacanth. If you have questions, your pharmacist is happy to help.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Phenylephrine page
“If you take phenylephrine (Sudafed PE, Biorphen) for congestion, treat this list as one that needs real attention, since six of its 81 entries carry a major rating. Phenylephrine tightens blood vessels to clear your nose, and more than half of the interactions here come from stimulant ingredients, ephedra above all, that can push blood…”
