Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
DOPAMINE AGONISTS
Why this applies to Safinamide Mesylate
Safinamide Mesylate falls under DOPAMINE AGONISTS — the group Vitex Agnus-castus interacts with.
Vitex agnus-castus might potentiate the actions of dopaminergic agonists due to possible dopaminergic effects.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the basic idea with chasteberry and Xadago (safinamide). Safinamide boosts dopamine activity in the brain to smooth out your Parkinson's 'off' times. Lab and animal studies hint that vitex may also nudge dopamine signaling, so in theory the two could add up and push your dopamine effects a little higher than expected.
If that happened, you might notice more dopamine-type side effects, like nausea, dizziness when standing, trouble sleeping, restlessness, or extra involuntary movements (dyskinesia). I want to be straight with you, though: this is a theoretical concern based only on test-tube and animal research, not real cases in people, so it may never amount to anything. Still, since both touch the same system, it's worth a quick chat with your neurologist or pharmacist before adding vitex.
