Agaricus mushroom is generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects reported are abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, and nausea.

Serious side effects are rare but have been reported, including allergic reactions, liver damage, and a lung condition called interstitial lung disease. Three cases of severe liver damage, including two fatal cases, occurred in women with ovarian or breast cancer who were taking chemotherapy and agaricus supplements together — though one patient was also a carrier of hepatitis B.

During pregnancy, there isn't enough safety data, so supplement doses are not advised. The same applies to breastfeeding — avoid supplement doses until more is known.

As a food in small amounts, agaricus mushroom is generally recognized as safe, but long-term effects of supplement use are not well established.

Antidiabetes Drugs

Theoretically, taking agaricus mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
In one clinical study in patients with type 2 diabetes who are stabilized on conventional oral hypoglycemic agents, 3 of 29 patients taking an agaricus mushroom extract 500 mg three times daily for 12 weeks reported hypoglycemia, compared to one of 29 patients in the placebo group.
