Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Not assessable

This is a single-ingredient Bacopa product and its label doesn't state a use — see Bacopa's own graded uses on its monograph.

Why this rating?
  • We looked at the product name, claims, and label statements and couldn't find a stated purpose to grade.

The evidence for bacopa's effectiveness hasn't been established for the conditions in our data. For Alzheimer's disease, ADHD, cognitive function, cognitive impairment, back pain, and sexual dysfunction, we hold insufficient reliable evidence to rate whether it works.

That doesn't mean it doesn't work — it means the studies we have don't yet meet the standard to say one way or another. If you're considering bacopa for a specific concern, talk with your pharmacist or doctor about what the current research actually shows.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data

Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Bacopa is generally well tolerated in studies, though quality and long-term safety data are limited. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, and headache.

Rates of these gastrointestinal effects have ranged from 12% to 30% in studies. It's also been reported to cause drowsiness, insomnia, or vivid dreams in some people.

Due to insufficient safety information, bacopa is not recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product.

Moderate identified

The most serious documented interaction for these ingredients is Moderate. Check your medications for a personalized result.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Bacopa.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Moderate.
  • For scale: 931 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before starting bacopa, double-check any medications that are broken down by your liver's cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, or CYP3A4) — this includes many common heart, blood pressure, and psychiatric drugs. Also check if you take anticholinergic or cholinergic drugs, cevimeline (Evoxac), or thyroid hormone.

Your pharmacist can search your exact medications on this page to see if bacopa is a concern for you.

The bottom line

Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Bacopa may help with brain function, but the evidence isn't strong enough yet to say for sure. The bigger issue is its potential to interact with medications through liver enzyme effects.

If you take any prescription drugs — especially heart medications, blood thinners, or anything metabolized by your liver — check them against the interaction tool first. Bacopa is generally well tolerated, but expect possible stomach upset, and avoid it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.

Anticholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use might decrease the effectiveness of both agents.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels, which could counteract the effects of anticholinergic drugs. Similarly, anticholinergic drugs might counteract the cholinergic effects of bacopa.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cevimeline (Evoxac)

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the effects and adverse effects of cevimeline.
In one case, a 58-year-old female taking cevimeline long-term for Sjogren syndrome experienced hyperhidrosis, malaise, nausea, and tachycardia shortly after taking a single dose of bacopa. Symptoms resolved after two days. Cevimeline is metabolized by cytochrome P450 (CYP) 2D6 and CYP3A4, and researchers theorize that bacopa may have inhibited these isoenzymes. However, it is unclear if bacopa causes clinically significant inhibition of either CYP2D6 or CYP3A4.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cholinergic Drugs

Theoretically, concurrent use of bacopa with other cholinergic drugs might have additive effects.
Bacopa seems to inhibit acetylcholinesterase and might increase acetylcholine levels. Theoretically, this could result in additive cholinergic effects when used with cholinergic drugs.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP1A2 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence shows that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP1A2, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C19 (Cyp2C19) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C19 substrates.
In vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C19 enzymes. It is not known whether this is clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP2C9 substrates.
Research on the effect of bacopa extracts on CYP2C9 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and non-competitively inhibit CYP2C9, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates

Theoretically, bacopa might increase the levels and adverse effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
Research on the effects of bacopa extracts on CYP3A4 enzymes is conflicting. Some in vitro evidence suggests that bacopa extract can moderately and competitively inhibit CYP3A4, while other in vitro evidence suggests that any effect is unlikely to be clinically significant.

Likelihood Possible Evidence D
Thyroid Hormone

Theoretically, bacopa might have additive effects when used with thyroid hormone.
Animal research suggests that bacopa increases thyroxine (T4) levels in mice by about 40%.

Bacopa Extract Powder 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com: Common Questions

Does Bacopa Extract Powder 500 mg by BulkSupplements.com interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Bacopa Extract Powder 500 mg has a known interaction with 930 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Bacopa Extract Powder 500 mg contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What exactly is bacopa, and what is it supposed to do?
Bacopa is a traditional herb used in Ayurvedic medicine. This product contains bacopa whole herb extract. It's been studied for brain health and cognitive function, but we don't yet have strong enough evidence to say it works for those purposes or any others listed in our data.
What are the most common side effects?
The most common side effects are gastrointestinal: abdominal cramps, diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, and headache. Between 12% and 30% of people in studies reported these kinds of stomach-related effects. Some people also reported drowsiness, insomnia, or vivid dreams.
Can I take this while I'm pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. There isn't enough safety information about bacopa in pregnancy or lactation, so it's best to avoid it during both. If you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing, talk with your doctor or pharmacist first.
How much liver enzyme interaction should I worry about?
The interactions with liver enzymes are rated Moderate, meaning bacopa may theoretically increase the levels and side effects of medications that depend on those enzymes. The research is conflicting about how strong this effect really is in actual people, but it's real enough to check your specific drugs before you start.
Does this product have any fillers or additives?
No inactive ingredients are listed for this product — it's just the bacopa extract powder.
Is bacopa safe to take long-term?
Bacopa is generally well tolerated in the studies we have, but quality and long-term safety data are limited. If you're thinking about taking it regularly, that's a good conversation to have with your pharmacist or doctor.
