Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains 3 active ingredients: organic bilberry extract, organic blueberry extract, and organic lutein. Bilberry and blueberry are both rich in anthocyanins, plant compounds with antioxidant properties.
Lutein is a carotenoid found naturally in leafy greens and the eye, where it's thought to protect the retina. The inactive ingredients are hypromellose (a capsule material) and organic rice hull concentrate (a filler).
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for what this product actually does is mixed and limited. For night vision, the data rates bilberry as possibly ineffective.
For several conditions bilberry is often marketed for—age-related cognitive decline, macular degeneration, atherosclerosis, high cholesterol, and chronic venous insufficiency—there isn't enough reliable evidence to rate it either way. Lutein, on the other hand, is possibly effective for age-related macular degeneration and cataracts, but the data on the other conditions lutein is sometimes promoted for is insufficient or shows it doesn't work.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Bilberry and blueberry extracts are generally well tolerated when taken by mouth. The most common side effects are dark-colored stools, flatulence, and mild stomach discomfort.
In clinical trials, a small number of participants reported temporary GI upset or flatulence; one study also noted dark discoloration of the tongue, teeth, and feces. Lutein is also well tolerated at typical supplement doses.
That said, the long-term safety of bilberry and blueberry supplements specifically is limited—food amounts are likely fine, but concentrated supplement doses haven't been studied enough. Both bilberry and lutein are rated likely safe in pregnancy and lactation, though there isn't extensive data on higher supplement doses during these periods.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on blood thinners (anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs), diabetes medications, or any drugs broken down by your liver through the CYP2E1 pathway—all are Moderate-severity interactions. If you're taking erlotinib (Tarceva) for cancer, that's also a concern.
These interactions are theoretical but based on real research.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is worth considering if you're interested in eye health, especially for macular degeneration or cataracts, since lutein has some supporting evidence there. However, if you take blood thinners, diabetes medications, or cancer drugs like erlotinib, you'll need to clear this with your doctor or pharmacist first—the interactions are real and could affect how well your medications work or raise your bleeding risk.
Talk it over with your healthcare provider before you start.

Bilberry Extract 150 mg by Spring Valley Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Spring Valley's Bilberry Extract 150 mg contains bilberry and blueberry extracts plus lutein.
The bilberry and blueberry components interact with several medication types, with the most serious concern being blood thinners (anticoagulants) and antiplatelet drugs — both rated Moderate severity. Bilberry and blueberry extracts can inhibit platelet clumping, which might raise your bleeding risk if you're already on a blood thinner like warfarin or aspirin.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
You should also be aware of Moderate-severity interactions with diabetes medications. Bilberry and blueberry extracts may lower blood sugar on their own, so combining them with antidiabetes drugs could push your glucose too low (hypoglycemia).
Additionally, these same extracts might speed up how your liver breaks down certain cancer and other drugs that are processed through a pathway called CYP2E1, potentially making them less effective. Bilberry and blueberry extracts also theoretically may reduce how well the cancer drug erlotinib (Tarceva) works.
Lutein has no documented interactions with medications. Altogether, these interactions span 275 individual medications.
Before you start this product, check your exact medications—especially blood thinners, diabetes drugs, and any cancer treatments—with your doctor or pharmacist.

For each ingredient in Bilberry Extract 150 mg with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
organic Bilberry extract
Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might increase the risk of bleeding when taken with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs.
In vitro, animal, and clinical research suggest that anthocyanidin extracts from bilberry can inhibit platelet aggregation.
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, bilberry leaf or fruit extract may increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal research suggests that bilberry leaf extract might have blood glucose-lowering activity. Also, one small clinical trial in patients with type 2 diabetes shows that taking bilberry fruit extract 470 mg as a single dose prior to an oral glucose tolerance test lowers plasma glucose levels when compared with placebo.
Cytochrome P450 2E1 (Cyp2E1) Substrates
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2E1.
Animal research shows that exposure to small concentrations of bilberry extract in drinking water for around one month increased CYP2E1 activity by 31%. However, exposure over a 2-month period did not increase CYP2E1 activity. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Erlotinib (Tarceva)
Theoretically, bilberry fruit extract might reduce the efficacy of erlotinib.
In vitro research suggests that bilberry fruit extract and its constituents, delphinidin and delphinidin-3-O-glucoside, inhibit the activity of erlotinib. This interaction has not been reported in humans.
