Digestive Calm Probiotic Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Digestive Calm Probiotic against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

What’s inside
Low disclosure
Digestive Calm Probiotic contains 14 active ingredients: L-glutamine (an amino acid) and 13 species of beneficial bacteria and yeast, including several Lactobacillus strains (L. acidophilus, L. salivarius, L. plantarum, L. paracasei, L. bulgaricus, L. brevis, L. rhamnosus, and L. casei casei), Bifidobacterium species (B. longum, B. bifidum, B. brevis, and B. animalis lactis), and Saccharomyces boulardii (a live yeast). These work together as a probiotic to support digestive health.
The capsules also contain inactive ingredients: rice flour and cellulose.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these ingredients is mixed. L-glutamine is effective for sickle cell disease and possibly effective for HIV/AIDS-related wasting, postoperative recovery, and critical illness — but those aren't digestive conditions.
Among the probiotics, L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, and Saccharomyces boulardii are possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and several show possible effectiveness for antibiotic-associated diarrhea and other specific conditions. For most of the other probiotics in this blend, the evidence available to us is insufficient to rate their effectiveness.
If you're considering this for a particular digestive issue, it's worth discussing with your doctor or pharmacist which ingredient might help most.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-glutamine is rated likely safe in pregnancy and is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, though people with kidney or liver disease should use it only under medical supervision. Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, constipation, diarrhea, flatulence, nausea, and vomiting have been reported, and rare cases of dizziness and headache have occurred.
The probiotic ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy people; however, L. acidophilus, B. longum, B. bifidum, B. breve, and Saccharomyces boulardii carry a caution for those who are seriously ill or immune-compromised, as there have been rare reports of these organisms causing serious infections (bacteremia, sepsis) in critically ill patients. Minor gastrointestinal effects like bloating, flatulence, and abdominal discomfort have been reported uncommonly with probiotic use.
For pregnancy and breastfeeding, L. acidophilus and B. bifidum are rated possibly safe; data on the other probiotics is limited or not on file. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist before using this if you're pregnant, breastfeeding, critically ill, or immune-compromised.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking this product if you use antibiotic drugs (Moderate concern with L. acidophilus, B. longum, B. bifidum, and B. breve — spacing doses apart can help), anticonvulsant medications (Moderate concern with L-glutamine), or antifungal medications (Minor concern with Saccharomyces boulardii). No interactions are documented for the other probiotic ingredients we were able to check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.

Digestive Calm Probiotic by Natural Rhythm Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Digestive Calm Probiotic by Natural Rhythm contains several ingredients with documented interactions.
Through its L-glutamine, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Bifidobacterium breve content, this product may interact with antibiotic drugs and anticonvulsant medications. The most serious concern is a Moderate-severity interaction: L-glutamine might theoretically oppose the effects of anticonvulsant medications by being metabolized to an excitatory brain chemical, though this hasn't yet been reported in humans.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Antibiotic drugs pose a Moderate concern with the probiotic ingredients (L. acidophilus, B. longum, B. bifidum, and B. breve). Because these are live organisms, antibiotics taken at the same time may kill a significant portion of them, reducing the probiotic's effectiveness.
Spacing out when you take antibiotics and this supplement can help avoid this.
Saccharomyces boulardii in this product has a Minor interaction with antifungal medications — antifungals may reduce the yeast's viability. We could not check several other probiotic ingredients (Lactobacillus salivarius, L. plantarum, L. paracasei, L. bulgaricus, L. brevis, L. rhamnosus, L. casei casei, and Bifidobacterium animalis lactis) because we hold no data for them.
Altogether, these interactions span 272 individual medications. Use the search tool below to check your exact prescriptions before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Digestive Calm Probiotic with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Bifidobacterium brevis
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium breve with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. breve.
Since B. breve preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. breve preparations by at least 2 hours.
L-Glutamine
Anticonvulsants
Theoretically, glutamine might antagonize the effects of anticonvulsant medications.
Glutamine is metabolized to the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate. Glutamate might have antagonistic effects with anticonvulsant drugs. However, this interaction has not yet been reported in humans.
Saccharomyces boulardii
Antifungals
Theoretically, taking antifungals with Saccharomyces boulardii might decrease the effectiveness of Saccharomyces boulardii.
S. boulardii is a live yeast. Therefore, simultaneously taking antifungals might kill a significant number of the organisms.
