Most of these probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy adults, though bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea have been reported rarely. Inulin commonly causes gas and bloating, especially at higher doses.

Importantly, live probiotics carry a rare but serious concern: in critically ill or severely immunocompromised patients, including premature infants and those with heart defects or weakened immune systems, these bacteria have occasionally entered the bloodstream and caused infections like sepsis.
