Flora 32 Billion CFU contains 20 active ingredients: three digestive enzymes (lactase, lipase, and cellulase) to help break down food, a blend of nine probiotic bacterial strains including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species, and additional enzyme and probiotic components in proprietary blends. Lactase helps people digest milk sugars if they're lactose intolerant.
The capsule also contains inactive ingredients—rice flour, vegetable cellulose (the capsule material), and silicon dioxide—which serve as fillers or binders.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
Lactase is rated effective for lactose intolerance, so if you have trouble digesting dairy, this ingredient should help. Several probiotic strains in the formula—Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, and Bifidobacterium longum—are rated possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and antibiotic-associated diarrhea; L. acidophilus is also possibly effective for Helicobacter pylori and bacterial vaginosis.
However, most of the other strains and the enzyme components show insufficient evidence or were not rated in our data. The evidence we hold does not establish whether this product works for digestive health broadly—only for the specific conditions listed above.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Most of the active ingredients are generally well tolerated in healthy adults. However, a few cautions apply.
Lactase has rarely caused contact dermatitis or allergic reactions in people exposed to powdered forms. Lipase and the live probiotic strains carry a small risk of serious infection (bacteremia, sepsis) in critically ill or immunocompromised people—if you have a severely weakened immune system or are hospitalized, check with your doctor before use.
Proteases may occasionally cause digestive upset or allergic reactions. For pregnancy, lactase is rated likely safe; Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacterium bifidum are rated possibly safe; Bifidobacterium longum and Streptococcus thermophilus are possibly safe; but lipase has limited safety data and proteases should be avoided unless prescribed by your doctor.
For breastfeeding, safety data are limited across most ingredients—talk to your doctor or pharmacist first.

Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium bifidum

Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium. bifidum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. bifidum.
Since B. bifidum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. bifidum preparations by at least 2 hours.
