Immune Essentials Comprehensive Formula Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Swanson
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Immune Essentials Comprehensive Formula against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Immune Essentials Comprehensive Formula by Swanson
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Immune Essentials contains six active ingredients chosen for immune support: shiitake and maitake mushrooms (polysaccharide-rich fungi), larch arabinogalactan (a fiber from larch tree wood labeled here as ImmunEnhancer), beta-glucan (a soluble fiber from yeast or grains), elderberry fruit extract, and colostrum (a milk-like fluid collected early in lactation, listed as ColostruMune 4070). The product also contains inactive ingredients — hypromellose, maltodextrin, rice extract blend, rice bran, and silica — which serve as fillers, binders, and flow agents in the capsule.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for most ingredients in this formula is not established. Beta-glucan shows the strongest support: it's rated Likely Effective for high cholesterol (dyslipidemia) and heart disease risk.
For the mushrooms, colostrum, and elderberry extract, the data we hold shows insufficient reliable evidence to rate their effectiveness against the conditions sometimes claimed for them — including colds, cancer-related side effects, fatigue, and respiratory infections. The effectiveness ratings don't support broad 'immune boost' claims.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Shiitake mushroom is generally well tolerated when cooked and eaten as food, but concentrated supplements lack long-term safety data; the main concerns with supplements are abdominal discomfort, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. Rare but serious risks include shiitake dermatitis (a distinctive skin rash from raw mushrooms) and intestinal blockage from large unchewed pieces.
Maitake and beta-glucan are generally well tolerated as food or in clinical trials, with the most common effect being mild gastrointestinal upset like diarrhea. Larch arabinogalactan may cause bloating and flatulence.
Elderberry prepared from ripe, cooked fruit is well tolerated; raw or unripe berries and other plant parts contain toxins that cause nausea, vomiting, severe diarrhea, and dizziness. One case of autoimmune hepatitis has been reported after long-term elderberry use in someone with underlying autoimmune disease.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding data are insufficient for all ingredients — maitake and elderberry safety data specifically advise against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding; for the others, there isn't enough information to know either way.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check if you use any immunosuppressant drugs (used after transplants or for autoimmune conditions) — all five checked ingredients may reduce their effectiveness. Also check antihypertensive drugs (blood pressure pills) and antidiabetes medications, which maitake and beta-glucan may intensify.
If you take warfarin, maitake poses a Moderate risk of increased bleeding. If you take pazopanib, elderberry may pose a Moderate interaction risk.
Search your exact medications on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This formula is built on ingredients that stimulate immune function, which is helpful if your immune system needs support — but that same activity can conflict with immunosuppressant drugs and other medications. If you take blood pressure pills, diabetes medications, warfarin, or any immunosuppressant, check with your pharmacist before starting.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor first.

Immune Essentials Comprehensive Formula by Swanson Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Swanson's Immune Essentials Comprehensive Formula contains six ingredients, five of which interact with medications.
The most serious concern is with immunosuppressant drugs (used after transplants or for autoimmune conditions): shiitake mushroom, maitake mushroom, larch arabinogalactan, beta-glucan, and elderberry all may theoretically reduce how well these drugs work by stimulating your immune system instead.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Maitake mushroom presents additional Moderate-severity risks. It may increase the effect of blood pressure-lowering drugs (antihypertensive drugs), raising the chance of dangerously low blood pressure.
It can also boost the effect of diabetes medications, which might lower your blood sugar too much. There's also a case report of maitake increasing the blood-thinning effect of warfarin, though evidence is limited.
Shiitake mushroom may decrease levels of certain medications metabolized by your liver (CYP2D6 substrates), potentially making them less effective — though this effect has only been shown in lab work, not in people. Beta-glucan carries the same Moderate blood pressure risk as maitake.
Elderberry may interact with pazopanib, a cancer drug, and could increase liver injury risk based on one case report.
We could not check ColostruMune 4070 Colostrum against medications — no interaction data is on file for it. Altogether, these interactions span 550 individual medications.

Shiitake Mushroom
Cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) Substrates
Theoretically, shiitake mushroom might decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
In vitro studies suggest that the shiitake mushroom extract AHCC might induce the CYP2D6 enzyme. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, taking shiitake mushroom might decrease the effects of immunosuppressive therapy.
In vitro evidence suggests that shiitake mushroom extracts stimulate immune function.
Beta Glucan
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, taking beta-glucans with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Clinical research shows that taking beta-glucans may reduce systolic and diastolic blood pressure in some hypertensive individuals.
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, beta-glucans might interfere with immunosuppressive therapy.
Some clinical research shows that beta-glucans have immunostimulant effects.
Maitake Mushroom
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Clinical research shows that taking maitake mushroom polysaccharide (MMP) can lower blood glucose levels in patients with types 2 diabetes.
Antihypertensive Drugs
Theoretically, combining maitake mushroom with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
Animal research shows that maitake mushroom can lower blood pressure.
Warfarin (Coumadin)
There is limited evidence that maitake mushroom may increase the anticoagulant effects of warfarin.
In a case report, a patient previously stabilized on warfarin developed an elevated international normalized ratio (INR) of 5.1 after taking maitake mushroom (Grifron-Pro Maitake D-Fraction) 1 drop/kg daily in three divided doses for one week. The elevated INR resolved after holding warfarin for two days, then reducing the dose by 11%. It is thought that the beta-glucan constituent of maitake mushroom might cause warfarin dissociation from proteins, resulting in increased free warfarin levels and increased warfarin effects.
ImmunEnhancer
Immunosuppressants
Theoretically, larch arabinogalactan might interfere with immunosuppression therapy due to immunostimulant effects.
