What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: kelp extract. Kelp is a brown seaweed that naturally holds potassium and iodine — the two compounds behind most of its interactions with medications.
The iodine content is particularly variable; some kelp supplements can deliver up to 1,000 micrograms per dose, far more than the daily recommended amount. There are no other inactive ingredients listed.
Does it work?
Couldn't assess
The evidence we hold on kelp extract doesn't establish that it works for any condition. For abortion and labor induction, the evidence rates it as possibly ineffective.
For cancer, high blood pressure, weight loss, and radiation sickness, there isn't enough reliable evidence to say whether it helps or doesn't. If you're thinking about kelp for a specific health goal, that's worth discussing with your doctor.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Kelp extract is generally well tolerated when the iodine is reduced, but standard kelp supplements can contain very high and variable amounts of iodine that may affect your thyroid — especially if you already have a thyroid condition. Kelp also concentrates arsenic from seawater, and arsenic levels vary by harvest location and batch.
One documented case involved arsenic poisoning from months of kelp use, causing headache, weakness, fatigue, memory problems, rash, nail damage, diarrhea, and vomiting. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are concerning.
High iodine can harm the developing fetal thyroid, so kelp supplements are best avoided in pregnancy unless your doctor directs otherwise. Iodine also passes into breast milk, and concentrated kelp supplements may deliver too much for a nursing infant's thyroid safety.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you take this kelp extract, check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on potassium-sparing diuretics (water pills that spare potassium), ACE inhibitors or other blood pressure drugs, digoxin or other heart medications, amiodarone, antithyroid drugs, or thyroid hormone replacement. All of these have documented Moderate severity interactions with kelp's potassium and iodine content.
Altogether, these interactions span 69 individual medications.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no assessable stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Kelp extract may be right for you if you don't take blood pressure drugs, heart medications, or thyroid drugs — but the variable iodine and arsenic content makes it a supplement worth talking through with your doctor or pharmacist first. If you're on any medication for your heart, blood pressure, or thyroid, check with your own healthcare provider before starting this.
Pregnant women and those breastfeeding should avoid it unless their doctor specifically approves.

Kelp Extract by BulkSupplements.com Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Kelp Extract by BulkSupplements.com interacts with several medication types, most seriously through its potassium and iodine content.
The potassium in kelp can raise blood potassium to unsafe levels (hyperkalemia) when combined with potassium-sparing diuretics, ACE inhibitors (blood pressure drugs), or digoxin (a heart medication) — all Moderate severity concerns. High iodine can worsen these risks and also interfere with how your thyroid medications and antithyroid drugs work.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Because some kelp supplements contain up to 1,000 micrograms of iodine, there's a particular risk with amiodarone (an antiarrhythmic heart drug that's already 37% iodine) — taking them together could push iodine to harmful levels. Kelp can also alter the effects of thyroid hormone replacement and antithyroid medications by shifting iodine balance in your body, making your thyroid condition harder to manage.
No interactions are documented for any other medications this product might contain, though the ingredient list consists of kelp extract alone. Still, you'll want to check your exact medications with the search tool on this page to be sure.

Kelp extract
Ace Inhibitors (Aceis)
Theoretically, laminaria might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with ACEIs.
Laminaria contains potassium.
Amiodarone (Cordarone)
Theoretically, combining laminaria with amiodarone might cause excessively high iodine levels.
Amiodarone contains 37.3% iodine and can increase iodine levels. Concomitant use with laminaria supplements, some of which may contain as much as 1000 mcg iodine, might increase the risk of adverse effects from iodine, including altered thyroid function.
Antithyroid Drugs
Due to its iodine content, laminaria might alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Some laminaria supplements contain up to 1000 mcg of iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking laminaria could theoretically alter the effects of antithyroid drugs.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, laminaria might increase the risk of hyperkalemia, which could increase the effects and adverse effects of digoxin.
Laminaria contains potassium.
Potassium-Sparing Diuretics
Theoretically, laminaria might increase the risk of hyperkalemia when taken with potassium-sparing diuretics.
Laminaria contains potassium.
Thyroid Hormone
Due to its iodine content, laminaria might alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
Some laminaria supplements contain up to 1000 mcg of iodine. Iodine in high doses has been reported to cause both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, depending on the individual's past medical history. Taking laminaria could theoretically alter the effects of thyroid hormone.
