What’s inside

Low disclosure
Ingredient Transparency · database check
Low

Most active ingredients don't disclose an individual amount — you can't tell how much of each you're getting.

Why this rating?
  • The label discloses an exact amount for 0 of its 1 active ingredient.

This product contains one active ingredient: lemon balm leaf glycerite (dried). It's made by extracting lemon balm leaves using glycerin as the solvent, which preserves the plant's compounds.

The inactive ingredients are glycerin, water, and lemon essential oil.

Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: supports calmness.
  • We looked for evidence on: Anxiety, Stress, Insomnia, Restlessness, Nervousness.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Lemon Balm is rated "Possibly Effective" for Stress (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Lemon Balm is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Anxiety, Insomnia.

Lemon balm is possibly effective for cold sores (herpes labialis) and possibly effective for stress and depression, based on the evidence we hold. The data suggests it may help with these conditions, but more research is needed to fully establish how well it works.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use in healthy adults, though high doses and long-term safety haven't been well studied. In trials, side effects like dizziness or sedation didn't occur more often with lemon balm than with placebo.

A rare case of heart rhythm changes was reported with a multi-ingredient product containing lemon balm, but it's unclear whether lemon balm alone was responsible. The safety data advises against using this product during pregnancy unless your doctor advises otherwise.

For breastfeeding, there's limited safety information—talk to your doctor before using it.

Kids Lemon Balm by Eclectic Herb: Common Questions

Does Kids Lemon Balm by Eclectic Herb interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Kids Lemon Balm has a known interaction with 264 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Kids Lemon Balm contains a single active ingredient, and that one ingredient can interact with many different medications on its own. We check it against each medication and show the mechanism responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
Can I give this to my child if they're on a prescription?
You'll need to check the specific medication with the interaction tool on this page. The main concern is if your child takes a CNS depressant (sedative or sleep aid) or thyroid hormone—lemon balm could interact with both. Talk to your child's doctor or pharmacist before adding it.
Is this safe to use long-term?
Lemon balm is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but we don't have solid data on long-term safety at this time. If you're thinking about using it regularly, check with your pharmacist.
Can I use it if I'm pregnant?
There isn't enough reliable safety data, so it's best avoided during pregnancy unless your doctor advises otherwise. Bring this up with your OB or midwife.
What is lemon balm supposed to help with?
The evidence supports that it's possibly effective for cold sores, stress, and depression. It may help with these, though more research would give us a clearer picture.
Does this cause drowsiness?
In clinical trials, drowsiness or dizziness didn't occur more often with lemon balm than with placebo. That said, lemon balm does have some depressant activity, especially if you're also taking other medications that make you sleepy.
Can I use this while breastfeeding?
There's limited safety information for breastfeeding mothers. Talk to your doctor before using it—they can give you personalized advice based on your situation.
