L-Tryptophan Ingredients & Drug Interactions
by Klaire Labs
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking L-Tryptophan against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: L-tryptophan, an amino acid your body uses to make serotonin and other neurotransmitters. The capsule also holds inactive ingredients including hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (the capsule material), microcrystalline cellulose (a filler), ascorbyl palmitate (a preservative), and water.
Does it work?
Not established
The evidence for L-tryptophan's effectiveness is mixed and often limited. For depression, current data rates it as possibly ineffective.
For anxiety, athletic performance, teeth grinding (bruxism), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder, we don't have enough reliable evidence to know whether it works — the data we hold simply isn't established for those uses.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L-tryptophan is generally well tolerated, but common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, headache, heartburn, stomach pain, dry mouth, flatulence, lightheadedness, belching, visual blurring, and vomiting. There's one serious safety note to know: in 1989, more than 1,500 cases of a rare neurological disorder called eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome (EMS) were linked to contaminated L-tryptophan from a single Japanese manufacturer.
About 95% of those cases traced back to that source, and the FDA restricted over-the-counter L-tryptophan imports afterward. Modern products from reputable makers are generally considered safe, but the history warrants caution.
Don't use this product during pregnancy — there isn't enough safety data. The same applies to breastfeeding; safety is not established, so it's best avoided while nursing.
If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before considering it.
Meds to double-check
Major interaction found
Before taking this L-tryptophan, double-check any CNS depressants you're on (such as sleep aids, anxiety drugs, or opioids) — combining them could make you dangerously drowsy. Also review any serotonergic medications like antidepressants or migraine treatments, since L-tryptophan may amplify their effects and raise the risk of serotonin syndrome.
Use the search tool on this page to check your exact prescriptions.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Major medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
L-Tryptophan may appeal to people looking for a natural way to support mood or sleep, but the effectiveness evidence is weak for most uses. It's not for you if you take sedating medications, antidepressants, or other serotonergic drugs — the interaction risks are real.
Check your medications with the tool on this page, and ask your pharmacist whether it's a fit for your situation.

L-Tryptophan by Klaire Labs Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
L-Tryptophan by Klaire Labs interacts with two important medication types.
The most serious concern is with CNS depressants (sedating drugs like benzodiazepines, opioids, and sleep aids) — combining them with L-tryptophan may cause additive sedative effects and increase drowsiness, which L-tryptophan can cause on its own.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
L-Tryptophan also has a Moderate interaction with serotonergic drugs (antidepressants, certain pain medications, and migraine treatments). Because L-tryptophan is a building block for serotonin, pairing it with these medications might raise serotonin levels too high, potentially triggering serotonin syndrome — a serious condition marked by confusion, rapid heartbeat, high blood pressure, and muscle rigidity.
Altogether, these interactions span 394 individual medications. Before you start this supplement, use the medication checker below to look up any prescriptions you're taking.
