Orally, chromium is generally well tolerated at typical supplement doses. The most common side effects reported are gastrointestinal upset, headaches, insomnia, irritability, and mood changes.

Rare serious effects — kidney or liver damage, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis), and low platelet counts — have been reported, usually at higher or longer-term doses. Skin rashes and itching have also been reported with some chromium forms.

Mangosteen extract up to 560 mg daily has been associated with mild tiredness, headache, dizziness, constipation, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dry throat, and flu-like symptoms in some people, though it's unclear if mangosteen was the cause. For pregnancy, chromium is rated likely or possibly safe in small amounts from food or prenatal vitamins, but extra supplement doses should be avoided unless your doctor recommends them.

Theoretically, chromium may have additive effects with antidiabetic agents and increase the risk of hypoglycemia.

Anticoagulant/Antiplatelet Drugs

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that gamma-mangostin, a constituent of mangosteen, is a potent and competitive antagonist of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor. Antagonism of the 5-HT2A receptor is believed to reduce platelet aggregation.
