Mangosteen and Cangrelor

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Cangrelor

Cangrelor falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Mangosteen interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that gamma-mangostin, a constituent of mangosteen, is a potent and competitive antagonist of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor. Antagonism of the 5-HT2A receptor is believed to reduce platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the quick picture. Cangrelor (Kengreal) is a powerful IV blood thinner given in the hospital during procedures like a stent placement, and it already works to keep your platelets from clumping. Mangosteen contains a compound that, in lab and animal studies, may also nudge platelets toward not sticking together. Stack the two and the concern is simply more blood-thinning effect, which could mean a higher chance of bleeding or bruising.

Honestly though, this is a theoretical worry based only on test-tube and animal data, not real patient cases, so don't panic. Cangrelor is also given by professionals who watch you closely. Still, if you take concentrated mangosteen supplements, mention them to your care team before any procedure rather than stopping anything on your own.

About Mangosteen

What is Mangosteen?

Mangosteen
  • Antioxidant support
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Immune support
  • Skin health
  • General wellness

Mangosteen is a tropical fruit whose rind is rich in plant compounds called xanthones that act as antioxidants. While it is popular in juices and supplements for inflammation, immune support, and general wellness, strong human evidence for these benefits is limited. It is likely fine as a food, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
