Mangosteen and Naproxen Sodium

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS

Why this applies to Naproxen Sodium

Naproxen Sodium falls under ANTICOAGULANT/ANTIPLATELET DRUGS — the group Mangosteen interacts with.

Theoretically, concomitant use of mangosteen with anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs may increase the risk of bleeding.
In vitro and animal research shows that gamma-mangostin, a constituent of mangosteen, is a potent and competitive antagonist of the serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor. Antagonism of the 5-HT2A receptor is believed to reduce platelet aggregation.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing with naproxen (the pain reliever in Midol Extended Relief): on its own, it can already nudge up your bleeding risk a bit because it affects how your platelets stick together and can irritate the stomach lining. Mangosteen, in lab and animal studies, seems to lower platelet clumping too. So in theory, pairing the two could add up and make you more prone to bruising, nosebleeds, or stomach bleeding.

I want to be honest about how thin this evidence is. This concern comes only from test-tube and animal research, not from people, so it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Eating mangosteen as a fruit or juice is very unlikely to matter. With concentrated supplements, it's worth a quick word with your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you notice unusual bruising.

What These Ratings Mean

Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.

Severity how clinically significant the interaction is
Major

Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.

Moderate

Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.

Minor

Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.

Likelihood how strong the evidence is that the interaction actually happens in people
  • LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
  • ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
  • PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
  • UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.
Evidence the quality of the studies behind the rating (graded A–D)
  • AHigh-quality meta-analysis (quantitative systematic review).
  • BCase-control study.
  • CConsensus.
  • DAnecdotal evidence.

About Mangosteen

What is Mangosteen?

Mangosteen
  • Antioxidant support
  • Anti-inflammatory support
  • Immune support
  • Skin health
  • General wellness

Mangosteen is a tropical fruit whose rind is rich in plant compounds called xanthones that act as antioxidants. While it is popular in juices and supplements for inflammation, immune support, and general wellness, strong human evidence for these benefits is limited. It is likely fine as a food, but talk with your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated supplements.
