Multi-Probiotic 40 Billion Ingredients & Drug Interactions
What is this page for?
First and foremost: checking Multi-Probiotic 40 Billion against your medications. The heart of this page is the interaction checker and the full interaction report — how this product’s ingredients may interact with prescription and over-the-counter medicines you may be taking.
Around that, we add a pharmacist’s high-level view of the product as a whole — what’s inside, the evidence for its stated use, how transparent the label is, and what safety data exists — so you can see the full picture in one place. It’s educational information from our licensed clinical databases and the clinical staff at HelloPharmacist — not medical advice — and we don’t sell or endorse products. Our editorial policy

Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Multi-Probiotic 40 Billion contains 17 ingredients total, including a proprietary blend of probiotic bacteria and a prebiotic. The live bacterial species include several Lactobacillus strains (acidophilus, casei, rhamnosus, plantarum, salivarius, bulgaricus, gasseri, paracasei, and brevis), multiple Bifidobacterium species (longum, breve, bifidum, lactis HN019, and lactis infantis), Lactococcus lactis, and Streptococcus thermophilus.
The blend also includes Short Chain Fructooligosaccharide, which is a prebiotic (a type of fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria). The inactive ingredients are hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, vegetable stearate, and silica—all common capsule and flow agents.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The data on this product's effectiveness is mixed and mostly uncertain. Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis, and possibly ineffective for atopic disease.
Bifidobacterium bifidum is possibly effective for IBS and respiratory tract infections. However, most of the other individual species in this blend have insufficient reliable evidence to rate their effectiveness for the conditions studied—meaning the research either isn't there yet or isn't conclusive enough.
If you're taking this for a specific condition, talk with your doctor or pharmacist about whether the evidence supports its use for your situation.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Probiotics are generally well tolerated in healthy people. That said, the live organisms in this product do carry some rare but serious risks worth knowing about.
In critically ill patients, immunocompromised patients, or premature infants, these bacteria have occasionally caused bloodstream infections (bacteremia) and sepsis—most often in people with central lines or severe underlying illness. In otherwise healthy people with intact immune systems, this risk appears to be very low.
Gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea have been reported but are uncommon. Lactobacillus acidophilus is rated possibly safe in pregnancy; Bifidobacterium longum, Streptococcus thermophilus, and Bifidobacterium bifidum are rated possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation.
For other ingredients in the blend, pregnancy and lactation safety data aren't on file. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
The biggest concern is antibiotic drugs—all Moderate severity. These can kill the live organisms in the probiotic, reducing its effectiveness.
If you take an antibiotic, separate it from this product by several hours on your doctor's or pharmacist's advice. No other medication types are documented to interact with the ingredients we could check, but we have no interaction data for several of the bacterial strains in this blend, so use the search tool below with your complete medication list.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This is a multi-strain probiotic aimed at supporting digestive and immune health, though evidence is stronger for some strains than others. The main thing to watch is antibiotic timing—if you're on antibiotics, space out when you take this probiotic.
If you're seriously ill, immunocompromised, or have central venous catheters, talk with your doctor before using any probiotic, since rare infections have been reported in those groups. For everyone else considering this product, run your specific medications through the checker below, then discuss it with your own doctor or pharmacist to see if it makes sense for you.

Multi-Probiotic 40 Billion by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Douglas Laboratories' Multi-Probiotic 40 Billion interacts with antibiotic drugs through its Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and Bifidobacterium bifidum content.
All five of these species carry a Moderate severity interaction with antibiotics: because probiotics contain live, active organisms, taking them at the same time as antibiotics can kill a significant number of those organisms, which might decrease the probiotic's effectiveness.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Altogether, these interactions span 182 individual medications.
The good news is that this is manageable. If you're on an antibiotic, simply separate when you take your probiotic from when you take the antibiotic—your doctor or pharmacist can help you space them appropriately.
Several other ingredients in this blend—Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactococcus lactis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus salivarius, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus brevis, Bifidobacterium lactis HN019, and Bifidobacterium lactis (infantis)—we could not check for interaction data.
Streptococcus thermophilus and Short Chain Fructooligosaccharide were checked and no interactions are documented in our data, though that does not guarantee none exist. Use the medication checker on this page to search for your specific drugs.
