HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Probiotic 65 Billion CFU by BioSchwartz
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This formula contains 16 ingredients, including 10 probiotic strains (live beneficial bacteria and related species) and a prebiotic blend to help feed them. The main bacterial species are Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Lactobacillus gasseri, Lactobacillus reuteri, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, and Lactococcus lactis.
The prebiotic blend includes chicory root powder and Jerusalem Artichoke to support probiotic growth. The formula also contains potato starch as an inactive ingredient, plus vegetable capsule and L-leucine as excipients.
Each dose delivers 65 billion colony-forming units (CFU)—a measure of viable microorganisms.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for these probiotics is mixed and often limited. L. acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, Helicobacter pylori infection, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis.
B. bifidum is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome and respiratory tract infections. For most other claimed uses in this product—allergic rhinitis, cognitive decline, asthma, anxiety, and the common cold—the data we hold are insufficient to rate effectiveness or show the probiotics are possibly ineffective.
Chicory root powder shows insufficient evidence for the conditions listed in our data.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
L. acidophilus and most Bifidobacterium strains are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though those with weakened immune systems should check with their doctor first. Rare gastrointestinal side effects like bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, and diarrhea have been reported, particularly when probiotics are combined.
Very rare cases of bacterial infection (bacteremia or sepsis) have occurred in critically ill or immunocompromised patients, though causation is unclear. Potato starch from green, raw, or sprouted potatoes can contain natural toxins (glycoalkaloids) that cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and in severe cases paralysis or respiratory failure—these toxins survive cooking.
Chicory is generally well tolerated in food amounts but may cause gas, bloating, and allergic reactions in sensitive people; medicinal amounts are possibly unsafe in pregnancy and lack sufficient safety data for breastfeeding. L. acidophilus is possibly safe in pregnancy; L. acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis, and Bifidobacterium longum are possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation, though data are limited.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before you start, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take antibiotics (several strains may lose effectiveness if taken together), blood thinners or thrombolytic drugs (potato starch may enhance their effects), diabetes medications (chicory may increase the risk of low blood sugar), or any medication used during anesthesia, especially succinylcholine (potato starch may prolong its effects). No interactions are documented in our data for the remaining probiotic strains we could not check.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may be worth considering if you have irritable bowel syndrome, have taken antibiotics and want to restore beneficial bacteria, or have bacterial vaginosis, since some strains show possibly effective evidence for these. Anyone taking antibiotics, blood thinners, diabetes medications, or medications used during surgery should talk with their doctor or pharmacist before starting—this product has documented interactions with each of these drug types.
People who are critically ill or have a weakened immune system should also check with their healthcare provider first.

Probiotic 65 Billion CFU by BioSchwartz Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
BioSchwartz Probiotic 65 Billion CFU has documented interactions through its potato starch, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, Lactobacillus gasseri, Bifidobacterium longum subsp. infantis, Bifidobacterium longum, and chicory root powder content.
The most serious interaction is potato starch with thrombolytic drugs (blood clot-busting medications)—a compound in potato may enhance their effects, raising the risk of bleeding.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Antibiotics are affected by multiple probiotic strains in this product: L. acidophilus, B. bifidum, B. breve, L. gasseri, and both forms of B. longum may lose effectiveness if taken at the same time as antibiotics, since antibiotics can kill the live organisms. We also hold data showing chicory root powder may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) if combined with diabetes medications.
Additionally, potato starch may prolong recovery from succinylcholine, a muscle relaxant used during anesthesia. Altogether, these interactions span 275 individual medications.
Several probiotic strains in this formula—Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, Lactobacillus reuteri, and Jerusalem Artichoke—could not be checked against our data.

For each ingredient in Probiotic 65 Billion CFU with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Probiotic Blend
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Chicory root powder
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, chicory might increase the risk of hypoglycemia when taken with antidiabetes drugs.
Animal and in vitro research shows that chicory extracts have antidiabetic effects.
Potato Starch
Succinylcholine
In humans, consuming potatoes prior to preoperative fasting prolongs the duration of the succinylcholine-induced neuromuscular block and slows recovery from anesthesia. This interaction is possibly related to inhibition of the butyrylcholinesterase enzyme by potato glycoalkaloids.
Thrombolytic Drugs
Theoretically, concomitant use of potato may enhance the effects of thrombolytic drugs. A carboxypeptidase inhibitor isolated from potato tubers may have inhibitory effects on thrombin-activatable thrombolysis inhibitor, and thereby enhance the activity of thrombolytic agents.
