Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Full disclosure
Bixa Botanical's Psyllium Husk is a single-ingredient product: blond psyllium powder (Plantago ovata). There are no inactive ingredients or fillers listed.
Psyllium is a soluble fiber derived from psyllium seeds; it absorbs water in your digestive tract and adds bulk to your stool.
Does it work?
Strong evidence
The evidence supports psyllium for constipation — it's rated Effective for relieving it. For cholesterol and heart disease, the data shows it's Likely Effective; psyllium can help lower LDL (bad) cholesterol and support cardiovascular health when used regularly.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Psyllium is generally well tolerated when you drink plenty of water with it. The most common side effects are mild — bloating, gas, abdominal discomfort, nausea, or diarrhea — especially when you first start.
Rarely, bowel or esophageal obstruction can occur, and a small number of people develop allergic reactions (sneezing, itching, rash, or in serious cases wheezing, swelling, or anaphylaxis), particularly with repeated or occupational exposure. Backache has also been reported.
For pregnancy and lactation, the safety data rates psyllium as Likely Safe, but talk with your doctor or pharmacist before starting it during pregnancy or while breastfeeding to make sure it's right for your situation.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this psyllium product, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you're on metformin, lithium, carbamazepine, or olanzapine — all ranked Moderate concern. If you take birth control pills, digoxin, or any other oral medications, spacing this product 30–60 minutes after your dose can help protect absorption, but it's worth confirming the exact timing with your pharmacist to be safe.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with clinical evidence supporting its stated purpose. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
Psyllium is a solid choice if you're dealing with constipation or want to support your cholesterol and heart health — the evidence backs it. The main catch is that it can interfere with how your body absorbs several medications, especially metformin, lithium, carbamazepine, and olanzapine.
If you take any prescription drugs, check them against the interaction tool on this page and talk with your doctor or pharmacist before you start, to figure out the right timing or whether you need adjustments.

Plantago ovata powder monograph & interactionsPsyllium Husk by Bixa Botanical Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Bixa Botanical's Psyllium Husk, which contains blond psyllium powder, interacts with several medication types.
The most serious concerns are metformin and lithium — both ranked Moderate severity. Psyllium's fiber can slow metformin absorption and boost its effects, and it may reduce lithium levels; spacing doses 30–60 minutes apart (metformin) or checking with your doctor (lithium) helps manage this.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Moderate interactions also exist with carbamazepine (an anti-seizure medication) and olanzapine (an antipsychotic). Psyllium may reduce how well your body absorbs these drugs, potentially lowering their effectiveness.
Carbamazepine is especially important — reduced levels could raise seizure risk.
Minor interactions occur with birth control pills containing ethinyl estradiol, digoxin (a heart medication), and oral drugs in general. Psyllium can change how quickly or completely your body absorbs these medications, though the effect on birth control is unlikely to be clinically significant.
The general rule with all oral medications is to separate doses by 30–60 minutes.
Altogether, these interactions span 2,026 individual medications. Use the medication checker below to look up your specific prescriptions before starting this product.

For each ingredient in Psyllium Husk with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Plantago ovata powder
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Theoretically, blond psyllium might reduce the effects of carbamazepine and increase the risk for convulsions.
Blond psyllium might reduce carbamazepine absorption and serum levels. A preliminary study using blond psyllium reported decreased carbamazepine bioavailability due to binding of the drug to psyllium, as well as reduction of available fluid in the gut for dissolution of the drug.
Lithium
Theoretically, taking blond psyllium at the same time as lithium might reduce lithium absorption.
The fiber in blond psyllium might decrease the absorption of lithium. Some case reports describe a reduction in plasma lithium levels with concomitant administration of blond psyllium. This was reversed when psyllium was stopped.
Metformin (Glucophage)
Theoretically, blond psyllium might increase the therapeutic and adverse effects of metformin.
Concurrent use of blond psyllium with metformin slows and increases metformin absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after metformin.
Olanzapine (Zyprexa)
Theoretically, taking blond psyllium at the same time as olanzapine might reduce olanzapine absorption.
The fiber in blond psyllium might decrease the absorption of olanzapine. A single case report describes a reduction in the effectiveness of olanzapine when it was taken concomitantly with an unspecified type of psyllium 3 grams orally twice daily. This effect was reversed when psyllium was stopped.
Digoxin (Lanoxin)
Theoretically, taking blond psyllium at the same time as digoxin might reduce digoxin absorption.
Psyllium might bind digoxin in the gut. However, some clinical evidence suggests that psyllium does not impact digoxin absorption.
Ethinyl Estradiol
Theoretically, taking blond psyllium at the same time as ethinyl estradiol might alter levels of estradiol.
Concurrent use of blond psyllium with ethinyl estradiol results in a slight increase in the extent of ethinyl estradiol absorption and a slower rate of absorption. However, this is unlikely to be clinically significant.
Oral Drugs
Theoretically, psyllium might increase, decrease, or have no effect on the absorption of oral drugs.
Psyllium seems to have variable effects on drug absorption. To avoid changes in absorption, take psyllium 30-60 minutes after oral medications. Animal research shows that blond psyllium delays and increases the absorption of metformin and ethinyl estradiol. Conversely, case reports and animal research suggest that blond psyllium might reduce absorption of lithium, digoxin, olanzapine, and carbamazepine. Finally, some pharmacokinetic studies show that psyllium does not affect the absorption of levothyroxine or warfarin.
