HelloPharmacist Scorecard of S.B.C. Saccharomyces Boulardii Capsules by Douglas Laboratories
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Saccharomyces boulardii, a live yeast strain used as a probiotic. The capsule itself is made from gelatin and contains microcrystalline cellulose and vegetable stearate as inactive ingredients.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Saccharomyces boulardii is possibly effective for several types of diarrhea — including rotaviral diarrhea, travelers' diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and diarrhea from Clostridioides difficile infection. It's also possibly effective for helping prevent necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC, a serious intestinal condition in premature newborns) and may help with Helicobacter pylori infection.
The evidence supporting these uses exists, but it's not definitive — more research is ongoing.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Saccharomyces boulardii is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but it should be avoided if you're critically ill or have a weakened immune system. There's limited safety data overall, so talk with your doctor before starting it.
In rare cases, people have reported mild gastrointestinal complaints like abdominal cramps, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite. Very rarely, the live yeast has caused a bloodstream infection (fungemia) — this has occurred almost exclusively in critically ill ICU patients with central lines, feeding tubes, or those on broad-spectrum antibiotics, and usually when capsules were opened or powder packets were used directly.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
If you take any antifungal medication (Minor severity), double-check with your doctor or pharmacist before using this product. Antifungals can reduce the effectiveness of the live yeast in this supplement.
No other medication interactions are documented for this ingredient in our data, but that doesn't mean none exist — your pharmacist can search your full medication list using the tool on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
This probiotic may help with certain types of diarrhea if you're generally healthy. It's not for people who are severely ill or immunocompromised.
If you're on an antifungal medication, you'll need to check with your doctor or pharmacist about whether to take this product and when. Always talk it over with your own healthcare provider before starting.

S.B.C. Saccharomyces Boulardii Capsules by Douglas Laboratories Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
S.B.C.
Saccharomyces Boulardii Capsules by Douglas Laboratories contains a live yeast that can interact with antifungal medications. The most serious documented interaction is Minor in severity: antifungals may reduce how well this probiotic works, because these drugs can kill the yeast organisms you're taking.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Although the interaction is rated Minor, the mechanism matters. Since Saccharomyces boulardii is a living organism, taking it at the same time as an antifungal (like fluconazole, ketoconazole, or other systemic antifungals) could significantly reduce the number of live yeast cells surviving in your gut.
This defeats the purpose of taking the supplement.
Altogether, these interactions span 40 individual medications. If you take any antifungal drug, run it through the checker below before starting this product — timing or separation may help, but your doctor or pharmacist can advise whether this probiotic makes sense for you right now.
