What’s inside
Full disclosure
This product contains one active ingredient: Saccharomyces boulardii strain DBVPG 6763, a live probiotic yeast. The inactive ingredients include hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, microcrystalline cellulose, silicon dioxide, and stearic acid — all standard capsule materials.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
Saccharomyces boulardii is rated possibly effective for six digestive concerns: rotaviral diarrhea, travelers' diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious intestinal condition in newborns), Clostridioides difficile infection (a harmful gut bacteria), and Helicobacter pylori (a stomach bacterium). 'Possibly effective' means the evidence is there but not yet conclusive — more research would strengthen what we know.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Saccharomyces boulardii is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. However, it should be avoided if you're critically ill or have a weakened immune system — in rare cases, a serious bloodstream infection (fungemia) has occurred, especially in intensive care patients with central lines or on broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Gastrointestinal side effects are rare but may include abdominal cramps, gas, nausea, vomiting, or decreased appetite. There isn't enough safety data for pregnancy and lactation — talk with your doctor or pharmacist before taking it if you're pregnant or breastfeeding.
Meds to double-check
Minor interactions only
Antifungal medications (Minor severity) may reduce how well this probiotic works, since they can kill the live yeast. Space out the timing if you take both, and confirm the plan with your doctor or pharmacist.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with some supporting evidence for its stated purpose. Only minor medication interactions are documented, and safety information is well characterized.
Saccharomyces boulardii may help with several types of diarrhea and gut infections, but the evidence is still building. If you're healthy and not on an antifungal, it's generally well tolerated — but if you're critically ill or immunocompromised, skip it and check with your doctor first.
Run your medications through the checker on this page, and talk it over with your own healthcare provider before you start.
