Moderate evidence
Evidence for Intended Use · database check
By FDA rules, dietary supplements can’t claim to treat, cure, or prevent disease — so labels speak in careful marketing language. We discern each product’s intended use from its name, label claims, and label statements, then grade the clinical evidence for that use. How these ratings are computed
Moderate

Some clinical evidence supports this product's ingredients for its stated purpose, but it isn't conclusive.

Why this rating?
  • The label markets this product for: intestinal support for travelers and gut health.
  • We looked for evidence on: Travelers' diarrhea, Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn disease, Ulcerative colitis, Clostridioides difficile infection — and 3 related terms.
  • The strongest evidence on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Possibly Effective" for Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (Natural Medicines).
  • Also on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Possibly Effective" for Travelers' diarrhea, Clostridioides difficile infection.
  • Also on file: Saccharomyces Boulardii is rated "Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate" for Crohn disease, Ulcerative colitis, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Saccharomyces boulardii carries "possibly effective" evidence for several types of diarrhea and related gastrointestinal conditions: rotaviral diarrhea, travelers' diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and Clostridioides difficile infection. It's also rated possibly effective for necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) in newborns and for reducing Helicobacter pylori infection.

These ratings mean there's some supportive research, but larger or higher-quality studies are needed to confirm benefit. We hold no effectiveness data for MOS Yeast Fraction.

How safe is it?

Well-documented data
Safety Information · database check
Well characterized

Adverse-effect, pregnancy, and general safety data are on file for most of these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • We hold adverse-effect (side-effect) data for 1 of the 1 matched ingredient.
  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding safety ratings cover 1 of 1.
  • General safety write-ups exist for 1 of 1.
  • Remember: this measures how much safety information exists. Thin data is not the same as being safe.

Saccharomyces boulardii is generally well tolerated in healthy adults. Rare side effects from oral use include gastrointestinal complaints — abdominal cramps, flatulence, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite.

More seriously, very rare cases of fungemia (yeast entering the bloodstream) have been reported, especially in critically ill ICU patients with central venous catheters, those on feeding tubes, or those on broad-spectrum antibiotics. For this reason, this product should be avoided by people who are critically ill or immunocompromised.

The safety data advises speaking with your doctor before use, particularly if you have limited immune function or are acutely ill.

Minor only

Only Minor-severity interactions are documented for these ingredients.

Why this rating?
  • 1 of the 1 matched ingredient can interact with medications — Saccharomyces Boulardii.
  • The most serious interaction on file is rated Minor.
  • For scale: 40 individual medications appear in the full list. A big number alone doesn't make a product dangerous — what matters is whether YOUR medication is on it, so run yours through the interaction checker on this page.

Before you take this product, double-check any antifungal medications you're on — they may reduce the probiotic's effectiveness by killing the live yeast. We could not check the MOS Yeast Fraction ingredient for interactions.

Altogether, these interactions span 40 individual medications. If you're on any prescription medication, run it through the checker on this page or confirm with your pharmacist before you start.

Saccharomyces boulardii + MOS 5 Billion CFU by Jarrow Formulas: Common Questions

Does Saccharomyces boulardii + MOS 5 Billion CFU by Jarrow Formulas interact with any medications?
Yes. Based on its ingredients, Saccharomyces boulardii + MOS 5 Billion CFU has a known interaction with 40 medications. Use the checker to see how it interacts with a specific drug.
How can one product interact with so many drugs?
Saccharomyces boulardii + MOS 5 Billion CFU contains 2 active ingredients, and an interaction can come from any of them. We check every ingredient, combine the results into one list per medication, and show which ingredient and mechanism is responsible.
Where does this information come from?
The product label data comes from the NIH Dietary Supplement Label Database (DSLD); the interaction data is built on the Natural Medicines database and reviewed by HelloPharmacist pharmacists.
What is Saccharomyces boulardii and what does it do?
Saccharomyces boulardii is a live probiotic yeast — a beneficial microorganism that helps restore normal gut bacteria, especially after diarrhea or antibiotic treatment. It's not a typical bacterial probiotic; it's a yeast strain chosen because it doesn't cause disease and may help calm inflammation and support digestive health.
Will this work if I'm taking an antifungal?
Probably not as well as it should. Antifungal medications kill fungi and yeast, so taking them at the same time as this probiotic may kill a significant number of the live organisms you're trying to get in. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist about timing — you might be able to space them apart or wait until your antifungal course is done before starting the probiotic.
Is this safe if I'm immunocompromised?
No — the safety data advises against it. Although rare, there's a documented risk of the yeast entering the bloodstream in people with weakened immune systems, especially those who are critically ill or in the hospital. Talk with your doctor before use if your immune system is compromised or you have a serious illness.
What side effects might I have?
Most people have no problems. Very rarely, some people report mild gastrointestinal complaints like cramps, gas, nausea, or loss of appetite. These typically pass quickly.
Is there enough safety data on this for pregnancy or breastfeeding?
The data on file doesn't include enough information for us to say either way. If you're pregnant or breastfeeding and thinking about taking this, talk with your doctor or pharmacist for personalized advice.
