Saccharomyces boulardii is possibly effective for several types of diarrhea: rotaviral diarrhea, traveler's diarrhea, and antibiotic-associated diarrhea. The evidence also suggests it may be possibly effective for necrotizing enterocolitis (a serious intestinal condition in newborns), Clostridioides difficile infection, and Helicobacter pylori.
That said, "possibly effective" means the evidence is suggestive but not yet definitive — more research would strengthen the case.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Saccharomyces boulardii is generally well tolerated in healthy adults, but there are important cautions. It should be avoided by people who are critically ill or immunocompromised (those with weakened immune systems), because rare cases of fungemia — a yeast infection in the bloodstream — have been reported, especially in intensive care unit patients with central lines, feeding tubes, or on broad-spectrum antibiotics.
Rarely, oral use has caused gastrointestinal complaints such as abdominal cramps, gas, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. Overall, safety data are limited, so use only with medical advice.
