HelloPharmacist Scorecard of Traveler's Defense + Immunity Probiotics by Lifeway
Our pharmacy team’s full take, with four database checks built into the cards below — a summary of what is known, not a grade of the product itself.
What’s inside
Low disclosure
Traveler's Defense + Immunity Probiotics contains 12 active ingredients: multiple species of live Lactobacillus bacteria (paracasei, rhamnosus, acidophilus, bulgaricus, casei, reuteri, and gasseri), Bifidobacterium bacteria (animalis lactis and longum), Saccharomyces boulardii (a beneficial yeast), Streptococcus thermophilus (a lactic acid bacterium), and inulin (a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial bacteria). The inactive ingredients are corn starch, a vegetarian capsule, magnesium stearate, and ascorbic acid.
Does it work?
Moderate evidence
The evidence for this product's ingredients is mixed. Saccharomyces boulardii is possibly effective for travelers' diarrhea, rotaviral diarrhea, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and Clostridioides difficile infection — conditions directly relevant to a traveler's product.
Lactobacillus acidophilus is possibly effective for irritable bowel syndrome, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, and bacterial vaginosis. Inulin is possibly effective for constipation and obesity.
However, most other ingredients in this product have insufficient reliable evidence to rate their effectiveness for the conditions listed on the label. We hold no effectiveness data for Lactobacillus paracasei, rhamnosus, casei, reuteri, or gasseri, and similarly limited or no evidence for Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, or Bifidobacterium animalis lactis.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
The probiotics in this product are generally well tolerated in healthy adults and children, though some caution applies. Rare but serious adverse effects have been documented: live organisms in these preparations can theoretically cause infection (bacteremia, sepsis, or other serious conditions), particularly in critically ill, immune-compromised, or hospitalized patients with central lines or catheters.
More commonly, the probiotics may cause mild gastrointestinal side effects including bloating, flatulence, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea, or constipation—these are uncommon but can occur when starting the product. Inulin commonly causes gas, bloating, and gastrointestinal cramps, especially at higher doses.
Bifidobacterium longum is possibly safe in pregnancy and lactation, but pregnancy and lactation data are not on file for Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus gasseri, or Saccharomyces boulardii, so speak with your doctor before use if you are pregnant or nursing.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking this product, double-check all antibiotic drugs you're on (the most serious interaction documented here). Also check any antifungal medications and antidiabetes drugs.
If you're taking antibiotics, separate them from this probiotic by a few hours so the antibiotic doesn't kill the beneficial organisms.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFormula with limited ingredient disclosure with some supporting evidence behind its ingredients' uses. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product may help with traveler's diarrhea and other digestive concerns, particularly if you're taking antibiotics. If you're seriously ill, immune-compromised, or hospitalized, skip it and check with your doctor first.
Anyone on antibiotic or antifungal medications should time this supplement separately from those drugs—space them out by a few hours. Run your medications through the checker on this page before you start.

Traveler's Defense + Immunity Probiotics by Lifeway Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Traveler's Defense + Immunity Probiotics by Lifeway contains multiple live probiotic organisms, several of which interact with medications.
The most serious documented interaction is with antibiotic drugs (Moderate severity). Since these probiotics are live and active, antibiotics can kill a significant number of the organisms and reduce the supplement's effectiveness.
This applies to Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Lactobacillus gasseri, and potentially others in the blend.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
The product also contains Saccharomyces boulardii, a live yeast, which has a Minor interaction with antifungal drugs — antifungals may kill the yeast organisms and reduce effectiveness.
Inulin, a prebiotic fiber in this product, has a Minor interaction with antidiabetes drugs and may theoretically increase the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), though the effect is unclear.
Several ingredients—Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus rhamnosus, Bifidobacterium animalis lactis, Lactobacillus casei, and Lactobacillus reuteri—could not be checked because we hold no interaction data for them. Altogether, these interactions span 307 individual medications.

For each ingredient in Traveler's Defense + Immunity Probiotics with known interactions, here are the types of medications they can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus acidophilus with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. acidophilus.
L. acidophilus preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. acidophilus preparations by at least two hours.
Bifidobacterium longum
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Bifidobacterium longum with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. longum.
Since B. longum preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. longum preparations by at least 2 hours.
Lactobacillus bulgaricus
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus delbrueckii with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. delbrueckii.
Lactobacillus delbrueckii preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. delbrueckii preparations by at least two hours.
Lactobacillus gasseri
Antibiotic Drugs
Theoretically, taking Lactobacillus gasseri with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of L. gasseri.
Lactobacillus gasseri preparations usually contain live and active organisms. Therefore, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and L. gasseri preparations by at least two hours.
Inulin
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, inulin might increase the risk of hypoglycemia with antidiabetes drugs.
Some clinical research shows that inulin improves glycemic control in patients with diabetes; however, it is unclear if it has hypoglycemic effects.
Saccharomyces boulardii
Antifungals
Theoretically, taking antifungals with Saccharomyces boulardii might decrease the effectiveness of Saccharomyces boulardii.
S. boulardii is a live yeast. Therefore, simultaneously taking antifungals might kill a significant number of the organisms.
