What’s inside
Full disclosure
Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored is a single-ingredient powder containing gymnema leaf extract. Gymnema is a plant used traditionally to support blood sugar control, though the evidence for this in people isn't established in our data.
The powder also contains several inactive ingredients (fillers and flavor compounds) including lactitol, fructose, polydextrose, maltodextrin, gum, oat bran, apple fiber, citric acid, and other compounds that form the base and taste of the product.
Does it work?
Not established
The effectiveness of gymnema for diabetes, prediabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome is rated as insufficient reliable evidence in our data. That means research so far hasn't settled whether it actually works for these uses in people.
If you're considering it for blood sugar support, talk it over with your doctor so you can weigh the uncertainty against any other options.
How safe is it?
Well-documented data
Gymnema is generally well tolerated in the short term, but quality varies between products and it does lower blood sugar — a real concern if you're also taking diabetes medications. Rare cases of liver inflammation (hepatitis) and a serious blood disorder (aplastic anemia) have been reported with gymnema use, though these are uncommon.
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, there isn't enough safety data, so the data we hold advises against use in both. Talk with your doctor or pharmacist if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing before taking this product.
Meds to double-check
Moderate interaction found
Before taking Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored, double-check with your doctor or pharmacist if you take antidiabetes drugs (insulin, sulfonylureas, metformin, etc.) — gymnema can lower blood sugar and boost their effect, raising the risk of low blood sugar. Also check if you're on drugs metabolized by CYP1A2, CYP2C9, or CYP3A4 enzymes in your liver, since gymnema can change their blood levels.
These affect many common medications, so your pharmacist can search your specific prescriptions on this page.
The bottom line
Scorecard at a glanceFully disclosed formula with no established evidence rating for its marketed use. Moderate medication interactions have been identified, and safety information is well characterized.
This product is mainly for people interested in blood sugar support who are not on diabetes medications and not pregnant or breastfeeding. If you take any prescription medications — especially diabetes drugs, cholesterol medications, or blood thinners — check with your doctor or pharmacist before starting, because gymnema affects how your liver processes a large number of drugs.
The evidence that it works isn't established yet, so weigh that with any other options available to you.

Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored by Omnilife Drug Interactions
HelloPharmacist Interaction Report
Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored by Omnilife contains gymnema leaf extract, which interacts with multiple medication types.
The most serious concern is with antidiabetes drugs — gymnema can lower blood sugar on its own, and when combined with diabetes medications (like insulin or sulfonylureas), the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) rises. This is a Moderate severity interaction.
Read the full breakdown — every affected drug type, severity by severity
Gymnema also affects how your body processes several other drugs through enzyme systems in the liver. It may increase levels of drugs broken down by CYP1A2 (a Moderate concern), and it can both increase and decrease levels of CYP2C9 substrates depending on the dose and timing — tolbutamide clearance goes up, phenacetin levels go up.
CYP3A4 substrate levels may also rise slightly, though the effect is Minor and inconsistent in research.
Altogether, these interactions span 852 individual medications. Before starting this product, check your exact prescriptions — especially diabetes medications, cholesterol drugs, blood thinners, and any other regular medications — with your doctor or pharmacist.

For each ingredient in Via Dulce Grapefruit Flavored with known interactions, here are the types of medications it can affect. Open any type for the detail — or search your exact drug in the checker above.
Gymnema leaf extract
Antidiabetes Drugs
Theoretically, taking gymnema with antidiabetes drugs might increase the risk of hypoglycemia.
Gymnema reduces blood glucose levels in some human and animal research. In human studies, it has been shown to enhance the blood glucose lowering effects of hypoglycemic drugs. However, other research in adults with prediabetes or metabolic syndrome suggests that gymnema does not reduce fasting levels of blood glucose. Until more is known, monitor blood glucose levels closely.
Cytochrome P450 1A2 (Cyp1A2) Substrates
Theoretically, gymnema might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP1A2.
Animal and in vitro research shows that gymnema can inhibit the CYP1A2 enzyme. In one animal study, oral administration of gymnema for 7 days increased the plasma concentrations of phenacetin, a CYP1A2 substrate, by about 1.4-fold and reduced the clearance of phenacetin by about 29%.
Cytochrome P450 2C9 (Cyp2C9) Substrates
Theoretically, gymnema might increase or decrease levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Animal research shows that gymnema can induce the CYP2C9 enzyme. In one animal study, gymnema caused a 2.4-fold increase in the clearance of tolbutamide, a CYP2C9 substrate, in rats. In vitro research also shows that gymnema can inhibit CYP2C9.
Phenacetin
Theoretically, taking gymnema with phenacetin might increase the levels of phenacetin.
Animal research shows that gymnema, administered orally for 7 days, decreases the clearance of phenacetin in a dose-dependent manner by about 21% to 29% and increases plasma levels about 1.3- to 1.4-fold when compared to control.
Tolbutamide (Orinase)
Theoretically, taking gymnema with tolbutamide might the decrease levels of tolbutamide.
Animal research shows that gymnema, administered orally for 7 days, increases the clearance of tolbutamide by 2.4-fold when compared to control.
Cytochrome P450 3A4 (Cyp3A4) Substrates
Theoretically, gymnema might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4.
One in vitro study using rat liver microsomes shows that gymnema can modestly inhibit the CYP3A4 enzyme. However, other in vitro research using human liver microsomes shows that gymnema does not affect CYP3A4 activity. Animal research also shows that gymnema does not alter the function of CYP3A4. In one study in rats, oral administration of gymnema for 7 days did not alter the clearance of amlodipine, a CYP3A4 substrate.
