These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Adrue interacts with whole categories of medication. Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Adrue in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CNS DEPRESSANTS
1 of 2Why this applies to Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital
Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital falls under CNS DEPRESSANTS — the group Adrue interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: barbiturates like butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital already calm your brain and nervous system down. Adrue, used in folk medicine as a mild relaxing herb, seems to push in the same direction. So if you take them together, the worry is that the slowing-down effects could stack on top of each other. That might leave you feeling more drowsy, foggy, or unsteady than usual, with slower breathing and deeper sedation in stronger cases.
I want to be straight with you, though: this concern comes only from animal studies, not human research, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. Still, because these are powerful sedatives, I'd play it safe. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than starting or stopping anything on your own.

BARBITURATES
2 of 2Butalbital, Phenobarbital, Secobarbital also falls under BARBITURATES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version. Barbiturates like butalbital, phenobarbital, and secobarbital already calm the brain and slow it down. Adrue appears to have its own gentle sedating effect. In an animal study, pairing adrue with a similar sleep-inducing drug roughly tripled how long the animals stayed asleep. So the worry is that stacking the two could pile on top of each other.
For you, that might mean stronger than expected drowsiness, grogginess, slowed breathing, poor coordination, or feeling out of it. Keep in mind this is only lab and animal evidence, not human studies, so it's a theoretical concern rather than a proven one. These drugs leave little room for error, so please don't combine them without checking with your pharmacist or doctor first.

- Digestive upset, gas, and diarrhea
- Calming or sedative effect
- Traditional use for fevers and infections
Adrue (Cyperus articulatus) is a sedge whose rhizome has long been used in traditional medicine for nausea and other stomach complaints, and as a mild calming agent.
