Why this applies to Citalopram

Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Aegeline interacts with.

Aegeline inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, aegeline may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use aegeline cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the gist for Celexa (citalopram): lab studies suggest aegeline may slow down CYP3A4, one of the liver enzymes that helps clear citalopram from your body. If that enzyme is blocked, a bit more citalopram could linger, which in theory might bump up its effects and side effects like drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, or jitteriness. Citalopram can also affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation) at higher levels, so that's worth keeping in mind.

That said, this is very weak, theory-only evidence from test tubes, with nothing reported in real people. Honestly, my bigger worry with aegeline is that it's been tied to serious liver injury and regulators have warned against it. I'd skip it and check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Aegeline is a compound originally identified in the bael tree (Aegle marmelos) that gained attention because it was added to some weight-loss and workout supplements. It is best known for being linked to serious liver injury in a product called OxyELITE Pro, and U.S. regulators warned against products containing it. There is no good evidence it safely helps with weight loss, and it should generally be avoided.

What Is Citalopram Used For?

Brand name: Celexa

Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
