Why this applies to Nimodipine

Nimodipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Aegeline interacts with.

Aegeline inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity in vitro. So far, this interaction has not been reported in humans. Theoretically, aegeline may increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP3A4. Some drugs metabolized by CYP3A4 include lovastatin (Mevacor), ketoconazole (Nizoral), itraconazole (Sporanox), fexofenadine (Allegra), triazolam (Halcion), and numerous others. Use aegeline cautiously or avoid in patients taking these drugs.

Here's the quick picture with nimodipine. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medicine out of your body. In laboratory tests, aegeline appears to slow that same enzyme down. If that held true in people, nimodipine could build up a bit more than expected, and since it relaxes blood vessels, that could mean a sharper drop in blood pressure, dizziness, lightheadedness, flushing, or a faster heartbeat.

That said, this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube research, and it hasn't been seen in real patients. Honestly, the bigger issue is that aegeline has been tied to serious liver injury and is best avoided altogether. Please don't change your nimodipine, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before using any supplement like this.

Aegeline is a compound originally identified in the bael tree (Aegle marmelos) that gained attention because it was added to some weight-loss and workout supplements. It is best known for being linked to serious liver injury in a product called OxyELITE Pro, and U.S. regulators warned against products containing it. There is no good evidence it safely helps with weight loss, and it should generally be avoided.

What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
