Here's the thing to keep in mind with alfalfa and Votrient (pazopanib). Alfalfa contains compounds that may gently nudge the immune system to be more active. Pazopanib isn't a typical immune-suppressing drug, but it does dampen tumor growth signals, so the worry on file is that alfalfa's immune-stimulating effect could, in theory, work against your cancer treatment.

I want to be honest about the strength of this concern. It rests on lab studies and a few case reports, not solid human trials, so it's more of a 'play it safe' caution than a proven problem. Everyday amounts of alfalfa sprouts in a salad are unlikely to matter much; concentrated alfalfa supplements are the bigger question. Before adding any alfalfa product, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Pazopanib

What Is Pazopanib Used For?

Brand name: Votrient

Pazopanib tablets — sold as the brand Votrient and as generic pazopanib — are used to treat two types of advanced cancer in adults: advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC), the most common form of kidney cancer, and advanced soft tissue sarcoma (STS) in patients who have already received prior chemotherapy.

Important limitation: Pazopanib has not been shown to work in adipocytic soft tissue sarcoma (a subtype involving fat cells) or in gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), so it is not used for those cancers.
