Protriptyline falls under ORAL DRUGS — the group Algin interacts with.

Theoretically, algin can alter the absorption of oral drugs. Laboratory research shows that algin, when consumed as part of the diet or used as a thickening agent in infant formula, reduces the absorption of certain minerals. Also, algin has been used as a tablet binder and disintegrant to enhance drug bioavailability. To avoid changes in absorption, take algin 30-60 minutes after oral medications.

Here's the simple version: algin is a soluble fiber from seaweed that swells into a thick gel in your stomach. That gel can grab onto a swallowed pill like protriptyline (Vivactil) and slow down or slightly lower how much of it your body soaks up. In theory, that could mean a bit less of your antidepressant gets absorbed, which over time might soften how well it works for your mood.

I want to be honest that this is a theoretical concern based on how fiber behaves, not on real cases of treatment failure, and it's rated as minor. An easy fix is timing: take your protriptyline first, then wait 30 to 60 minutes before any algin product. If you're unsure or your symptoms shift, check with your pharmacist or doctor before changing anything.
