Protriptyline falls under TRICYCLIC ANTIDEPRESSANTS (TCAs) — the group Cowhage interacts with.

Theoretically, use of TCAs might reduce the levels and clinical effects of cowhage.
Cowhage contains levodopa. Use of TCAs might reduce the absorption of levodopa. Some case reports describe patients that developed hypertension and dyskinesia when taking both levodopa and TCAs.

Here's the gist for Vivactil (protriptyline) and cowhage. Cowhage is a natural source of L-dopa, the same active ingredient found in some Parkinson's medicines. The thinking is that a tricyclic like protriptyline may slow how your stomach empties, which can change how L-dopa is absorbed and may blunt some of cowhage's effects. There are also older case reports where people combining L-dopa with a TCA developed high blood pressure or unwanted involuntary movements (dyskinesia).

I'll be honest, this is theoretical and based mostly on how these compounds behave, not strong studies. Still, because both touch the dopamine system, please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before pairing them, especially if you notice a racing heart, spikes in blood pressure, or jerky movements.
