Theoretically, atractylodes might decrease the levels of CYP1A2 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist for your Activella, which combines estradiol with norethindrone. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP1A2 (among others) to help process estrogen. In animal studies, high doses of atractylodes seemed to speed that enzyme up. If that happened in people, it could break down the estrogen a little faster and slightly lower its levels, which might mean weaker relief of menopause symptoms like hot flashes or night sweats.

The honest part: this is only a theory based on lab and animal data, and it has not been shown in humans. The interaction is rated minor, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, if you plan to take atractylodes regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Estradiol, Norethindrone Acetate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Your Activella combines two active hormones, estradiol and norethindrone, and your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear them out. The thought here is that atractylodes might slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened, a little more hormone could hang around in your body, which in theory might nudge up the usual estrogen-related effects like breast tenderness, bloating, nausea, headaches, or spotting.

Here's the reassuring part: this is a minor, theoretical concern. The enzyme slowing was only seen in animals given high doses, and it has never been shown in people. I wouldn't lose sleep over it, but since hormones are involved, it's worth a quick mention to your pharmacist or doctor before you start the supplement.
