Why this applies to Hydrocodone

Hydrocodone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist for hydrocodone and atractylodes. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down hydrocodone. In animal studies (not in people), high doses of atractylodes slowed a similar enzyme. If that same slowdown happened in humans, hydrocodone could clear more slowly and build up a bit, which could mean stronger opioid effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, or in a worst case, slowed breathing.

That said, this is purely theoretical right now, based on lab and animal work, and rated as a minor, possible concern. I'm not telling you to avoid anything. Since hydrocodone is a powerful opioid, just loop in your pharmacist or doctor before adding atractylodes so they can keep an eye on you.
