CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES

Levonorgestrel, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to induce CYP1A2 activity. This effect has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Nordette, Microgynon, and similar combos of levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol). In animal studies, high doses of atractylodes seemed to speed up an enzyme called CYP1A2, which helps break down the estrogen part of your pill. If that happened in people, it could in theory lower your hormone levels and make the pill a little less reliable, which matters because you depend on it to prevent pregnancy.
But here's the reassuring part: this has only been seen in animals at high doses, never confirmed in humans, so the concern is mostly theoretical. Still, because an unplanned pregnancy is a big deal, I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor before adding atractylodes, and consider a backup method if you do.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill combines two hormones, ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel, and your liver clears the estrogen part partly through an enzyme called CYP3A4. The thinking here is that atractylodes might slow that enzyme down a bit, which could let estrogen levels drift slightly higher. In practice that might mean more of the usual estrogen-related nuisances, like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or spotting.
Honestly, I would not lose sleep over this one. This is a theoretical, minor concern based only on animal studies using high doses, and it has never been shown in people. Your pill is not a prodrug, so this would not weaken your protection against pregnancy. Still, if you plan to take atractylodes regularly, run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.
