Zolpidem Tartrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Atractylodes interacts with.

Theoretically, atractylodes might increase the levels of CYP3A4 substrates.
In animals, atractylodes administered at high doses has been shown to inhibit CYP3A1 activity, which is a homolog to the human CYP3A4 enzyme. This effect has not been shown in humans.

Here's the gist with Ambien (zolpidem) and atractylodes. Your body clears zolpidem mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In animal studies using high doses, atractylodes appeared to slow a similar enzyme down. If that were to happen in people, zolpidem could hang around longer and feel stronger, meaning more next-morning grogginess, drowsiness, dizziness, or unsteadiness when you get up.

That said, I want to be honest about the evidence. This is theoretical and only seen in lab and animal work, never confirmed in humans, which is why it's rated minor. So I wouldn't lose sleep over it (pun intended), but if you plan to combine them, give your pharmacist or doctor a quick heads-up first.

What Is Zolpidem Used For?

Brand name: Ambien

Zolpidem is used short-term for insomnia. Most formulations — including Ambien, oral tablets, and Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules — are approved to help people who have trouble falling asleep at bedtime. Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules are specifically indicated for adults under 65.

The extended-release formulations (including Zolpidem Tartrate Extended-Release Tablets) help with both falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. Sublingual tablets (Edluar, Zolpidem Tartrate Sublingual Tablet, and Zolpidem tartrate sublingual) are taken as needed when you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep — but only if at least 4 hours of sleep time remain before you need to be up.
