Rifabutin falls under ANTIBIOTIC DRUGS — the group Bacillus Subtilis interacts with.

Theoretically, taking Bacillus subtilis with antibiotic drugs might decrease the effectiveness of B. subtilis.
Since B. subtilis preparations usually contain live and active organisms, simultaneously taking antibiotics might kill a significant number of the organisms. Tell patients to separate administration of antibiotics and B. subtilis preparations by at least 2 hours.

Here's the thing to keep in mind: this interaction works in one direction only. Rifabutin is an antibiotic, and Bacillus subtilis is a live probiotic. When you take an antibiotic like rifabutin, it doesn't just target the bacteria causing your MAC or H. pylori infection. It can also kill off a good chunk of those live probiotic organisms before they ever get a chance to settle in your gut. So the worry here is that rifabutin makes the probiotic less effective, not the other way around.

Your rifabutin will still do its job normally. To get more value from the Bacillus subtilis, simply space the two apart by at least 2 hours. This is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, so don't be alarmed, but do check with your pharmacist, especially since rifabutin is often used when the immune system is weakened.

Rifabutin capsules are used to prevent disseminated MAC (Mycobacterium avium complex) disease — a serious bacterial infection that can spread throughout the body — in adults with advanced HIV infection.

It is not approved as a treatment for active tuberculosis (TB), and it should not be used alone for MAC prophylaxis in anyone who has active TB.
