Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: your Clorpres combo (chlorthalidone, a water pill, plus clonidine, which relaxes your blood vessels) already works to bring your blood pressure down. Oat and barley beta-glucans can nudge blood pressure a little lower too. Stack those together and there's a small chance your pressure dips more than expected.

If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, or tired, especially when you stand up quickly. To be honest, this is mostly theoretical and based on weak, anecdotal evidence, so it's not a reason to panic. The fiber in a bowl of oatmeal is unlikely to be a problem. If you take concentrated beta-glucan supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor and keep an eye on your readings.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Chlorthalidone, Clonidine page

“Clorpres pairs chlorthalidone, a diuretic, with clonidine, and both work by lowering blood pressure, so the 224 supplements and herbs on file deserve more than a casual read. Most either push blood pressure lower than intended or, like tyramine, fight the medication and let pressure climb.”

About Beta-glucans

What is Beta-glucans?

  • High cholesterol
  • Heart health
  • Immune support
  • Blood sugar control
  • Wound care (topical)

Beta-glucans are natural fibers found in oats, barley, mushrooms, and yeast. The strongest evidence supports the oat and barley types for modestly lowering cholesterol and blood sugar, while immune-related claims from yeast and mushroom sources are far less proven. They are generally well tolerated, but check with your pharmacist before starting any supplement.
