Atazanavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Beta-methylphenethylamine (bmpea) interacts with.

Theoretically, BMPEA might increase the levels and clinical effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that BMPEA inhibits CYP3A4 by up to 37%.

Here's the gist for Reyataz (atazanavir). Your body clears this HIV medicine partly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Lab studies suggest BMPEA can slow that same enzyme down (by about a third in a test tube), which in theory could let atazanavir build up a little higher in your blood. More atazanavir can mean more of its known side effects, like that yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice from raised bilirubin), nausea, headache, or heart rhythm changes.

I want to be honest: this concern is theoretical and based only on lab data, not on real patient studies. Even so, BMPEA is an unapproved stimulant with its own heart risks, so I'd steer clear of it. Please check with your pharmacist or HIV provider before combining anything new with your regimen.

Beta-methylphenethylamine (BMPEA) is a synthetic stimulant chemically similar to amphetamine that has been found in some weight-loss and sports supplements, often without being clearly listed on the label. It is not an approved or well-studied dietary ingredient, and regulators have warned that it may carry real cardiovascular risks. Because of safety concerns and the lack of human research, it is best avoided.

What Is Atazanavir Used For?

Brand name: Reyataz

Atazanavir capsules are used together with other antiretroviral medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults and in children 6 years and older who weigh at least 15 kg (about 33 lbs).

Reyataz — available as capsules and as an oral powder — is also approved for HIV-1 treatment in adults and in children as young as 3 months who weigh at least 5 kg (about 11 lbs). Reyataz oral powder must always be taken with ritonavir and food, and is not for use in children weighing less than 5 kg.
